I have a 1950 Ford 8N with the coil spring seat with Monroe Shock. Can this be replaced with the U shaped spring? Am I better off buying the coil spring? My butt keeps grounding out! Any advice?

Welcome to the forum - Glad to have you!!

Body weight will affect ride height. Replacement parts for the Monroe EZ Ride Comfort Seat are scarce.

All of the EZ Ride seats I've seen use the Ford OEM seat and hinge so yes the U-shaped spring should bolt right up.

I'd go ahead and replace the MONROE/DEARBORN EZ-RIDE SEAT coil spring and shock with new ones. New parts are available at STEINER TRACTOR -see LINK below. There were three optional tractor seats available beginning with the 8N tractor, and sold thru DEARBORN/FORD. The first was the MONROE EZ-RIDE seat. It was supposed to give a smoother ride as it had a special shock absorber and large coil spring design. The problem with it though was its load capacity was limited to 150 lbs. Many farmers weighed more than that so it didn't offer a much better ride as seat would bottom out. Later Ford introduced the KNOEDLER seta, a little better design. Then came the Rest-O-Ride seat. The R-O-R was first sold as an option, then became a standard OEM feature with the Hundred Series models. Both the Monroe and the R-O-R offer some new parts nowadays, but not the Knoedler. You don't see many Knoedler seats but they are out there. Both the EZ Ride and the R-O-R instructions say to remove your tractor pan seat and install it on them to use. When the R-O-R became OEM issue, it sported its own pan seat. The standard pan seat and spring have its limitations as well. If you weigh over 200 lbs. the seat will compress the spring enough that it bottoms out on the top cover. Continuous bouncing up adown in the field will take its toll on the spring and eventually it will fail. I speak from experience. Original springs were built Ford Tough- superior heat treated spring steel. But even so they will fail as described. Aftermarket springs today are not very tough. Whatever you decide to do, try adding a padded seta cushion as well. At least in winter you behind won't have to sit on a cold seat to plow snow with. There was once an aftermarket heated pan seat offered for the 9N, but I've only seen one and no info on who made it.
