3000 Ford Holley carb/timing advance.

Neighbor has 3000 3 cyl gas with Holley carb, has been fighting problem for sometime. Starts and runs, new electronic ign, good flow of fuel, new fuel pump.First time I saw tractor, distributor will not turn past center when trying to adjust timing, advance housing hits carb. Spits and sputters when throttling up or loading engine, sometimes dies, will start right back up. Carb or ign problem?

Could be ether one but I'd check the accelerator pump in the carb first, if it's stuck any time you accelerate or load the engine it will experience a instant lean condition. Hesitate, spit, splutter, die.
Next would be the vacuum advance on the dist and last the mechanical advance weights inside the dist.

That's would be how I would approach it but I mainly have diesels, someone with a gas model may recommend doing it differently.

Sounds more like carb. Does putting the choke on half way help it?

If the dist. hits the carb you should be able to move it over one tooth. Follow the instructions in the shop manual after aligning the timing marks.

I had similar problems - bad idle, wouldn't take a load, etc. Pulled off distributor and lubed vac advance which did not help much.

Tried rebuilding the carb, also didn't help. Finally threw in the towel and bought a $350 Zenith. Starts and runs perfectly now.

I agree with 450. Most likely carburetion.

Do yourself a big favor and buy the correct carb kit from CNH. It is EXPENSIVE but it will be the correct kit if you take both tractor and carburetor serial numbers to your CNH dealer when you order it.

Will be a waste of $120+ if the carb is worn out. Mine had a worn throttle bore and worn accel pump bore. No kit can fix that.

Take it apart and check all that stuff first.

Exactly.

The assumption was that such would be done.

One should also check for wear in the float pivot pin bores.

I usually fine the accelerator pump is rusted in the bore and will break off when you try to pull it out. As the reservoir is at the bottom of the bowl, thats where the water collects and sets for long periods, hence the design problem with the pump. HOWEVER... tractor will still run fairly well with out it. yes it will studder on a max dump of throttle but in practical use, it was not that much of a problem. Once loaded down at1900/2000 rpm and plowing it would do pretty good with the governor working back and forth. And since I did not drive it on the street, dumping to full throttle was not an issue. Most tractor work is simi-constant rpm work. And yes this 3000 had a loader on it.
