A little help deciphering the model/serial number stamping

model - 41014 B or E (hard to make out)

D10 (410) = 4000 65-3/68
10 = All purpose
1 = diesel
4 = Ind. 540 rpm PTO

Last letter looks like a B or an E
B = 6x2 speed manual (3x1 + hi/low)

8A22B built January 22, 1968 second shift

C192777 is your serial number which is from 1968
E = Select-O-Speed (10x2)

my neighbor just bought this 4000 not running. He's in the process of getting it running. He's finding out its clogged from the sludge in the fuel tank to the double filter. From there it seems to be clear. Today we hooked up temp tank with fresh diesel directly to the IP and cranked the engine with fire at all . We even squirted small amounts of ether into the intake and no fire at all. We are stumped as to why it won't even fire on ether. It feels like it has good suction on the intake manifold and we see the exhaust pipe flap flapping when cranking. No white smoke or gray smoke whatsoever. We kinda suspect low compression and are in the process of removing the injectors to get some oil into the cylinders.
Anybody have any brighter ideas as to the problem?

If the fuel line is that bad, I'm going to guess it's sat a good while. That likely means injection pump issues. It could be low compression as well. In my experience, if a diesel is not getting a drop of fuel injected, it won't fire on ether either.

There was a 1 1/2" of mud in the bottom of the tank and the fuel line from tank to filter pac was totally plugged . the injection lines from the IP are clear but not sure about the IP itself

Wow! You definitely need to suspect the injection pump is at least in need of teardown and thorough cleaning if not more.

Heard from neighbor this morning, he pulled injectors and checked compression, only 20 psi dry, he added trans fluid and rechecked, it jumped to 80 so know he is letting it soak with tranny fluid in the cylinders. He also pulled vavle cover and noticed sticking valves so he flooded that top end with tranny fluid also. This tractor had been sitting for approx. 14 years

D14 (or 414 on tractors made before 4/1/68) at the beginning of the model number means that it is the "Special Utility (SU) model within the 4000 series. The 4000SU is referred to as the 4140 in the parts drawings because of that model designator. The 4000 ag chassis is likewise referred to the 4100 in the parts drawings because its model number started with 410 or D10.

Model designators for the 1965-1975 4000 series models:
D10 or 410 - general purpose ag chassis model (4100)
D12 or 412 - Highway model (4120)
D11 of 411 - Low Center of Gravity model (4110)
D13 or 413 - Rice chassis model (4130)
D14 or 414 - Special Utility chassis model (4140)
D20 or 420 - Row Crop model (4200)
D30 or 430 - Rice chassis model (4300)
