This was a rebuilt starter. It has been sitting for a while but recently the drive wants to stay engaged after the engine fires up. Have y'all had that problem and should I just change the starter ? I sure dont want any ring gear problems.

The starter drive wasn't lubricated was it? They are not supposed to be. They will quickly grab enough clutch dust to bind them up.

It was a rebuilt. I think I'll remove the starter and then engage the solenoid. Then I'll know which is the problem.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

XX1s have a remote solid mounted on the battery box.

I think if you look at your starter there is a small wire going to the top of the starter to what they call a solenoid. take the nut off the wire and start your tractor and when it starts remove that wire. if it stops engaging then you either still have power to it or it s stuck opened. I have tapped it with a wrench and freed it up that way. try this and get back to us on what happened.

Had that problem when the solenoid stuck. The starter would
keep spinning until I disconnected the battery. Is that your case?

If so, rap the side of the solenoid pretty sharply with a screwdriver
handle or hammer handle and try it again. For mine, if they freed

up and didn't do it again, they were good. If they stuck again, they

did it repeatedly and I had to replace the solenoids.

If it is physically stuck, I'd look at the ring gear and drive teeth.

May a good polishing would help them slide better.

I'll check the solenoid wire with a test light to see if big wire to starter stays lit. It wasnt doing this when I first started using it but it has set a while. I 'll pull the starter to look at it.
