Ford 4000: Square Fender Compatibility

So,

I had a bunch of stuff to do around the farm, including some brush hogging, but there was a local equipment auction.

I send my wife and our youngest daughter with a list of items that I had pre-inspected the night before; including a few tractors.

Well, last night, our friend trucked home a Ford 4000, 3 cylinder diesel with a loader; that my wife bid on at the auction.

4,000 dollars...coincidental pricing for a Ford 4000.

Anyway, so far, I'm feeling very happy with her choice. It starts quickly, runs smoothly, no smoke at idle, no visible oil leaks (I know...give it time), brakes work, clutch seems good (but a little high...maybe I can adjust).

The only two issues that I can see so far are wobbly fenders; because they're almost corroded right through at the bottom. It's also missing the knobs for the fuel shutoff and light switch. I can pull the fuel shutoff without the knob; but not the light switch.

So now I'm looking around for scrap or aftermarket fenders. My wife said that she would like to replace the existing round ones with square ones.

According to TractorData.com, it shows three styles of Ford 4000:

Early 60's had round fenders and looked like a 900 series.
Late 60's had square fenders.
Early seventies had round fenders again.

I'm wondering if that was a distinguishing characteristic between the model types, or if that just so happens to be the types of fenders on the particular tractor that they took the pictures of.

******** Here are my actual questions****************

So... where do I look on my 4000 for a serial number?

If I post the serial number here, would anybody be able to tell me what style of square fender would work?

********* And now back to me just socializing ***********

I might not reply quickly...It came with a full tank of diesel, and I was using our Ford 2N to run a six foot brush hog yesterday.

I'm going out to put that 4000 on the brush hog and really get some work done today.

Happy Sunday gents, and keep your hay dry.

Any fender you find from a 3 cylinder Ford All Purpose model with planetary final drives will bolt on your 4000. Others may as well.
The 4000 I used to own sports flattops and a ROPS from a 3910.

Not many for the 4000's had flat top fenders other than the 4200 row crop model, but the 4600 and later model flat top fenders will bolt on to the 4000's axle.

Fenders can be found new aftermarket but the stands they bolt to cost as much as the fenders.

The fenders on mine came from a 4600

Model and serial numbers are located on the right side behind the starter, there should be 3 rows of numbers
model #
build date
serial #

As for the hay I'm heading over to ted what got wet yesterday, hopefully we can get it rolled before the next rain showers scheduled for this afternoon.

First off, the "early 60's" (1961-1964) 4000's were the same as the earlier 800 and 801 series tractors with the 4 cylinder red tiger engine that was used from 1953-1964 that had a radius rod front axle with double sided steering arms and a single reduction rear axle with dry outboard drum brakes. The 4000 that was made from 1965-1975 was a completely different tractor with a 3 cylinder engine, a heavier non-radius rod front axle with single sided steering arm and a double reduction rear axle with wet inboard brakes. The earlier 4 cylinder 4000 and the later 3 cylinder 4000 shared almost no parts in common except for the 3x5 blocking plate on top of the hydraulic top cover, which means they can both use the same kinds of optional remote valves, diverter valves and selector valves that bolt on in place of the blocking plate.

The photos at tractordata are just examples and are not representative of the truth for all cases.

On the 3 cylinder 4000's The flat top fenders were mostly used on the tractors made to be sold into the European market and the rounded fenders were mostly used on the tractors made to be sold into the US market, but both types of fenders were used for the entire production run (1965-1975). And the reason I say "usually" is because you can never really say anything was an absolute with Ford tractors. As long as you were willing to pay they could be ordered either way here in the US and in some other countries, but there were some European countries like Germany that had safety regulations that required the flat top fenders because those came with wider foot rests that left no gap between the fender and the foot rest.

As Rick says, any fenders that fit a 3 cylinder 4000 with the double reduction rear end will fit on your new tractor.

The model number, serial number (Tractor Number) and production date code (Unit Number) can all be found stamped into the flat spot that faces upward on the right side of the transmission bell housing just above the two large threaded holes near the starter. Here's a picture showing where it is:

And here's a close up picture of what to look for:

For tractors made after November 1967 they also put a foil sticker on the underside of the right side hood panel above the battery with those same 3 numbers plus some other numbers. If you can find the numbers in either location and post them here we can help you decode them.

(quoted from post at 12:49:40 06/10/18) Actually I said any 3 cylinder Tractor with planetary finals, not just 4000?s.

Sorry for the mis-quote. You're right, even ones from newer models like the 4600, 4610, 3910, etc. will fit.

Destroked 450.... I LOVE the look of that 4000 with the square fenders. You've just about sealed the deal for this idea for me.

I also have an ammo can (they were on sale at TSC last summer for 10 bucks) that I painted Ford Blue, waiting in my garage at the farm. I was going to mount it on my 2N...but now I'm picturing the 4000 with big, white, square fenders and that blue ammo can mounted to one of them as the tool box....
