So,
I had a bunch of stuff to do around the farm, including some brush hogging, but there was a local equipment auction.
I send my wife and our youngest daughter with a list of items that I had pre-inspected the night before; including a few tractors.
Well, last night, our friend trucked home a Ford 4000, 3 cylinder diesel with a loader; that my wife bid on at the auction.
4,000 dollars...coincidental pricing for a Ford 4000.
Anyway, so far, I'm feeling very happy with her choice. It starts quickly, runs smoothly, no smoke at idle, no visible oil leaks (I know...give it time), brakes work, clutch seems good (but a little high...maybe I can adjust).
The only two issues that I can see so far are wobbly fenders; because they're almost corroded right through at the bottom. It's also missing the knobs for the fuel shutoff and light switch. I can pull the fuel shutoff without the knob; but not the light switch.
So now I'm looking around for scrap or aftermarket fenders. My wife said that she would like to replace the existing round ones with square ones.
According to TractorData.com, it shows three styles of Ford 4000:
Early 60's had round fenders and looked like a 900 series.
Late 60's had square fenders.
Early seventies had round fenders again.
I'm wondering if that was a distinguishing characteristic between the model types, or if that just so happens to be the types of fenders on the particular tractor that they took the pictures of.
******** Here are my actual questions****************
So... where do I look on my 4000 for a serial number?
If I post the serial number here, would anybody be able to tell me what style of square fender would work?
********* And now back to me just socializing ***********
I might not reply quickly...It came with a full tank of diesel, and I was using our Ford 2N to run a six foot brush hog yesterday.
I'm going out to put that 4000 on the brush hog and really get some work done today.
Happy Sunday gents, and keep your hay dry.
