3000 Generator - Want to play a pricing guessing game?

Original Lucas generator. It will motor but will not charge.
I took it to the shop and had it tested. They confirm my finding,
but aren't sure what's wrong with it either. They'll let me know.
Their minimum price on a generator is $70.
Anyone want to guess what's wrong and what it will cost?
I'm almost afraid to.
Generator is on a tractor that sat for a few years outside, but the
generator is not at all rusty. In fact, covered in grease and gunk.

If it will motor, but not charge, and you're sure the problem is with the generator, then it can only be an open or short in the field
circuit. Easy enough to check with an ohmmeter. Check resistance between the F terminal and ground. It should not be zero, and it should not
be infinite. I don't know off the top of my head what a good resistance is.

Motors, but does not charge, my guess is bad wiring internally, maybe a broken wire? Field coils bad? Worn Brushes? Wrong pulley? Cost would depend on what is the root cause and if they are going rebuild the entire unit. I'm thinking $150 or so for all that.

Starters and generators cheap on www. I have bought both, Lucas brand for sure on some, very inexpensive and have had zero problems. I have a
Lucas VR in my 3000 with about 6k hours and it's the original, still working...gen crapped out several years ago and replaced with online Lucas with the
tach output gearing. Starter was a 4" and supposed to be 5". Bought new online, Lucas not a problem. How a 4" got in a diesel I don't know but with
that amount of engine time and where this tractor has been....clutch pedal is worn through in spots, who knows what it has gone through. I had to do an
inframe when I bought it.

'63 2000 got a new www Lucas gen and just a couple of years ago a new starter.

Taking it to a shop, I would expect them to go through it and replace all the old questionable stuff, and be in that $150-200 area. It's there and
they have it opened up and you have the $70 spent, do the whole thing right. Then It's done for a long time.

If you or a beer drinking friend know what you are doing and poke around and find one problem and ignore the other weak stuff, probably a few
bucks.

REAT! ....but what was wrong that he changed or replaced?

Cleaned and dressed the commutator, replaced the bushings and brushes.
I just finished bolting it on, working like it should now.

hat reminds me of a starter from a year ago that was so full of dirt/oil/grease/goop that disassembled/washed and all was good again.

I think that was the case here too. The tractor had been setting for
a few years before I got it. Generator worked when it wanted to.

Think of it as a status symbol. Someday I hope to get there too.

Some people think a Rolex is the status symbol watch. Not needing a watch at all
because you don't have to care what time it is seems like a better symbol to me! :)
