FORD 5000 Diesel starting problem

I am having problems starting my 5000 diesel with out using starting fluid. About a month ago it started missing out so I changed the fuel filter. Solved that problem. Then after that every time I went to start it, it always took a little more cranking time for it to start until it just would not start at all with out using eather. When cranking, it smokes so its getting fuel. Just a little shot of eather is all it takes even after sitting only 30 mins. It runs good, pulls good. Will not fire at all even with it being 90 degrees outside with out starting fluid. Anyone have any ideas????
 
We have a 4 cylinder diesel 5000 that does exactly the same. Gave up fussing with it and just keep a can in the tool box. If you figure something out post it for the rest of us.
 
Rotary or inline pump? If inline pump when was lube oil in pump changed? Rotary pumps get worn enough to make hard starting.
 

The little vanes in the back of the pump get worn and the check valve could be leaking dropping the pressure off of the pump.

My MIL's 5600 did the same thing, would start better in cool weather than in hot.
 
You changed the filter and the problem started, why have you not changed to a different filter or checked that you did not leave an extra O-ring in there?

My guess is that air is getting in the system and while there is enough fuel to smoke, there is not enough to start. A shot of ether makes it spin fast enough to get the flow up to running speed and clears the air out of the system.

So check the filter first. O-rings installed correctly. Check for bubbles at pump bleeder.

Since the problem started after a filter change... I would wager it has some air in it. I'd probably change the filter again, make sure to change ALL the rubbers, including on the retainer bolt, and go from there. The lift pump may also be getting poor.
