You?ve been helping me with my wiring problem on my 5000. Wanted to start a new thread to make sure you could answer my question. I have taken the tape off of all the harnesses to trace wires. I have isolated the wire that is supposed to go from the key switch to the regulator through the plug that connects the rear and front harnesses. Can I just plug the alternator output wire into that plug? The wire that is currently in that spot on the plug is going to the solenoid...what wire is supposed to go to the solenoid?

There is no wire that goes from the key switch to the regulator. There is a warning lamp wire coming from the regulator, which goes to the warning lamp bulb, and then the keyswitch.

Regardless, do NOT run your alternator output wire to this circuit. Your alternator output terminal needs to be wired to battery constantly, through a heavy gauge wire. This is why I said to tap into the two "B" wires at the old regulator.

Ok that makes perfect sense except there aren?t two or even one brown (or any other color) wire past that plug in the picture. When I got the tractor, the output wire from alternator went around to the solenoid and was fastened to the stud with the + battery cable and another wire from that plug. Tractor started, but battery never charged. Obviously I know next to nothing about automotive wiring, although I am learning now. I have traced all the other wires from key switch, instrument panel and light switch, and they are all where they should be and the right colors still. It?s only past the plug that connects front and rear harnesses that is all cobbled up. The wiring diagram in manual shows a brown wire from key switch to regulator. I?ve followed this wire to the plug, but there is nothing past the plug, and there is not the original regulator. I don?t want to pester you with all this, but I?d like to avoid dropping more money than I have to right now after already doing a complete engine rebuild. I don?t know what to do without those two brown wires you?re talking about.

One of the two brown wires that were originally attached to the "B" terminal of the regulator originally went to the hot side of the battery and the other went to the always hot side of the key switch.

At this point, I'd suggest one of two things: 1) buying a new harness (they're not that expensive), or 2) wiring your alternator output straight to the starter battery terminal post. Make sure you use at least a 10 gauge wire when you do this.

Ok, I will at this point do option 2 since it was that way before. Will that charge the battery too? It didn?t before because (I?m hoping) the old alternator was bad. It did test bad.
