1963 Ford 4000 Transmssion Fluid

Hi

Major rookie here...again

I have Farm and Fleet universal tractor fluid that I was going to put in my 1963 Ford 4000 gasser transmission, however I was recently informed that I need a fluid that meets spec.

Does anyone know if Farm and Fleet UTF meets the spec of M2C134D? The jug does not mention the spec. I don't have any CNH dealers nearby.

thank you!

Yep! I sure wouldn't use it if it doesn't say it meets or exceeds the needed spec. See my oil recs on your other post.

You don't need 134D. That's for today's tractors with hydro stuff. WW sells 303 oil. Get that. It meets the JD 303 spec which is usually listed if anything. Anytime you see the JD 303 spec on cans listing the multitude of applications you will also see Ford.......134B/C. I have a '63 2000 and a couple of years ago drained the tranny and the hyd sump and put it in both. Works fine.....Differential still has 80W-90 Gear oil.

For the record I just purchased an '88 3910 and the I&T manual for it still specs 134B/C.

Fluids that only say on the label that they meet the JD 303 specification most likely do not meet the Ford M2C134 specification, neither the A, B, C or D version. The original spec for the S-O-S transmission was M2C41A, which was superseded by the M2C134 specification that went through the various letter suffixes, A then B then C and finally D.

In fact, there are no fluids on the market today that actually meet the JD 303 specification. That spec was based on sperm whale oil which became illegal in the 1970's because sperm whales were put on the endangered species list. JD actually dropped that spec back then and switched to J14B, which was superseded by J20A and eventually J20C. So anything that claims on the label to meet the JD 303 spec is either lying, or it is being sold illegally since the sperm whale was never taken off of the endangered species list.

303 is the worst thing one can do to a Ford tractor. The last I knew sales of 303 have been outlawed in Missouri and Georgia. More states are sure to follow . . . if they haven't already.

I used CARQUEST Multi-Trac (P/N 760-05) from Advance Auto in mine if I recall. I know it was one of the expensive buckets they had in the store, but I had some speed perks to use up anyway so I got $20 off each bucket. I just found one that specifically listed 134D.

Make sure that it says "meets or exceeds" and not just "can be used as a replacement for".
