Ford 4500 backhoe valve adjustment

I need to adjust valves after head work and new gasket. The
only inspection plate I have found is at left rear of engine.
How is best way to know TDC? Turning engine one
revolution using starter also would appear difficult. Any
advice for this task would be appreciated. Bob.

For any 3-cylinder engine, what I do is turn the engine until I find split overlap for any one cylinder, and then turn the engine over exactly one more turn and adjust both valves on that cylinder. Repeat process for the other two cylinders.

Split overlap is defined as when one valve is closing and the other is opening, both of which are open an identical amount.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I was not familiar with the split overlap technique.
My issue at the moment is how to rotate the engine in a controlled manner. Manual cranking option is not available. I can repeat bump the starter and hope to find the desired position. Other ideas on options I may be overlooking? Thanks. Bob

Remove the starter and bar it over with a small to medium sized prybar.
