Ford 2600 8spd stuck gear

Hey All. New member here. I've been getting lots of great info from this sight and decided to join to hopefully learn even more. I'm new to the tractor world but am very mechanically inclined and looking for a little advice on my first tractor.

I recently purchased a 1975 Ford 2600 gasser. I bought it as a 6spd but now know it is actually an 8spd. The problem is te 4/8 gear will not engage. All other gears work great with zero issues. I have removed the shifter cover and tried to gently persuade the 4/8 gear back to engage without success. Any advice on how to fix this would be great. Thanks!

How about you list the numbers that are stamped on the clutch housing just behind the starter so we can confirm what you have.
For 4/8 gear you need to move the shifter to the far right and forward.
With the shift top off you should see a total of 4 shift rails in a 8x2 trans, 4/8 is to the far left and you can't gently move them.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to get the numbers tomorrow after work but there are 4 shift rails. And yes we are talking about the same gear, on the pattern it would be forward and to the right. With the cover off I would need to move the left most rail aft. I attempted moving it with a 3ft pry bar. I moved all the others to get a feel for how much force it would take. The 4/8 gear will not go back with the same or slightly more force. Even with the shifter I can feel it engage with the shift rod but it will not move.

Have you tried with the range shifter in high or low, or only when the range shifter is in neutral? They made a special 7 speed version of that transmission for sale into Germany because of road speed laws there that 4th worked in low range but didn't work in high, but I'm not sure how that fastest gear was locked out.

Never mind my last post. I didn't notice the subject said 2600 until after I posted it. They stopped making the 7 speed for Germany when the x600 series came out.

Any info is good info. That's interesting they made a 7spd like that. I'm not sure if it matters but the tractor is a dual clutch live pto. Also the trans fluid was milky. I assume the shifter cover was leaking and rain water got in. I did change it for fresh fluid though.

I bought the tractor for brush hogging 10 acres. I'm sure I can get by without the 4/8 gears but I just like my stuff to work like it's supposed to.
