I have noticed the pto shafts on early fords seems to have a smaller pto shaft. I went to hook up my finish mower on my jubilee and noticed after I took the over riding clutch off the pto shaft was to small for my mower drive. my 960 has the larger pto so when did for change over. thanks

According to the parts site, they switched from the 1-1/8" PTO shaft to the 1-3/8" shaft on 1/1/57, which was the beginning of the last year of the hundred series production.

The X00 series came either way, by the time the X01's, large shaft was standard. Don't know if small was an option on those.

1 ⅛ to 1 ⅜ later on and seems everything since, up through Cat 2 is that size. I had a Fergie TO 20 with it and I think I saw some N Fords with it. Never had a 100 numbered Ford so I can't say on that. I'm going to guess around 1950.

Several minor changes accord in the 1957 model year 100 series tractors. , including a switch from a 1 1/8th to a 1 3/8th PTO shaft .

This does not answer your question, but is interesting reading anyway. The paragraph that tell the prior revision dates may help you. http://www.fartakmachine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Front-and-Rear-Power-Take-Off-for-Agricultural-Tractors.pdf

Wasn't sure what year they changed them, dads 56 850 had the small shaft that we used an adapter on for several years, later when the shaft needed replaced we upgraded it to the bigger shaft.

We broke many of those adapter sleeves, the ones that didn't change the length of the 1 1/8 shaft but adapted it to the 1 3/8 mating coupling, on a '55 850. That was mostly on the sickle mower mowing alfalfa and some grass. That was a miserable mower tractor, BTW. I much preferred the '60 871, which of course had the 1 3/8 shaft. We also had a '57 960 that had the 1 3/8 shaft.

Just as an aside, I now have a Genesis tractor, an 8670, that not only has the 1 3/8 540 shaft option, but the 1 3/8 1000 shaft and 1 3/4 1000 shaft options as well.

PTO shafts went thru a few changes. The first 1-1/8" spline, used from '39-'43, then from '43-'52. The NAA Model tractor, introduced in September, 1952 as the new Jubilee Model, was the first to come equipped with the newer ASAE (American Society of Agricultural Engineers) 1-3/8" Spline PTO shaft. It also was tad longer. Nowadays they only sell the 1-3/8" splined shaft. Many fellas use an adaptor -see LINK below -that adapts the original 1-1/8" spline to the 1-3/8" spline. I've used these on both my early 9N and early 8N and never had any problems. Many folks also install an ORC -over running coupler device, recommended for use with mowers and brush hogs. It prevents one from riding into trees, fence posts, and ditches when mowing... ; > )
