Cooland temp gauge

I'm almost restoring my Ford 4000SU. I have replaced the non-working gauge cluster with a aftermarket cluster. Everything is working except the coolant temp gauge. I replaced the sender when I rebuilt the engine. The gauge did not move at all when engine was wormed up. I grounded the wire to gauge and it went to full hot. Ordered another sender and now gauge is slowly moving all the way to hot side. Checked temp top of hose outlet and it is reading 175-180. How do I find the correct sender for this cluster?

This is a very common issue because the original gauges were bi-metallic and the replacement gauges are magnetic, requiring a different sending unit. If you were to order a sending unit for a 4610, you should be good to go, at least electrically. The only problem with that idea is that the "correct" sender will have 3/8" NPT threads on it, and your engine will only accept 1/8" NPT. Bushing it out for the larger sender will NOT work.

My solution in a situation like this is to drill out the intake manifold in the water jacket area for 3/8" pipe. This can be done very easily because the manifold is aluminum. You'd need a 3/8" NPT pipe tap along with a 9/16" drill bit to complete the job.

At,antic now has a direct replacement for the 1965-1957 proofmater cluster. It may be available from others sources. If you don?t have this one, Bern has the answer to your dilemma.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll check out Atlantic first and if its a no go, I'll be drilling intake.
