4000 ford

I cannot figure out the serial number or any other numbers for this tractor. If someone would help me I would be thankful. I just picked this one up for a really good price even if it does need a rebuild job.

A102-397 looks like an Antwerp Belgium serial number, and that is a fairly early one. Only reference I have on specific years for Antwerp serial numbers was that they were at A168xxx when they changed the sheet metal and grills on 4/1/1968, so it was made well before that.

5B10C looks like the Unit Number, which would mean that the tractor was made on February 10 of a year ending in a 5, which is most likely 1965 since the serial number is so low.

B255 doesn't look familiar as anything worth noting.

Have you looked on the rougher part of the casting, toward the center of the tractor from the flat spot that was ground smooth where you found those first numbers. Sometimes they are hard to see, especially if there are several coats of paint over them.

Another spot to look is on the flat spot on the left side of the tractor to see if any numbers are stamped there. The early European made thousand series tractors sometimes had some numbers stamped on the left side instead of the right side.

Since you're talking about it needing a rebuild, I should mention that if it's a gasoline engine, then it will probably be a 192 ci if it is original. The diesel 4000's were all 201 engines, but the early gassers were 192's. They change the 4000 gas engine to a 201 on the same date that the changed the sheet metal and grill design, 4/1/1968.

Another way to tell which size engine a 4000 gasser is, would be to look at the engine serial number, which is stamped into the flat rail just above the oil pan on the right side of the engine, toward the front. It should be a single letter followed by a 6 digit number. If it is a 192 it should start with a P and if it is a 201 it should start with a D.

I can tell you it is a diesel engine (3 cyl). I picked it up for 1250.00 so I think I made a good deal even with an overhaul.

If it doesn't run at all right now, then $1250.00 might have been a bit high unless you know the seller and they can swear to you that everything else was working properly when the engine quit. Not being able to run the engine means that you can''t test the transmission or 3 point lift or the PTO, so any or all of those might have problems as well.

It started and ran . The lift works and the pto works. Not sure how well the lift works but it did go up and down. He had to pull it to start it but it did start.

Then $1250.00 sounds reasonable.

I found some more numbers on the tractor.These numbers are on the engine block on the right hand side (stamped).

Casting numbers are C5NN6015 for the engine.
Trans. casting numbers are C5NN7005E.

Stamped numbers on the drivers side under the hyd. pump are B7014

PD223499 is the engine serial number. The P means it was made for the 4000 series before 4/1/68, the D means that it is a diesel engine, and the rest is just the serial number, which was similar to the tractor serial number in that they were all sequential no matter which series or model the next one was for. Not sure what the L156 at the end was for.

The casting numbers tell us when the casting was designed, but they don't tell us a lot about when the components were assembled or which particular model of engine or transmission it is.

Engine block casting number C5NN6015:
C - casting was designed in the 1060's decade.
5 - casting was designed in the year ending in a 5 within the decade (1965)
NN - casting was designed by the tractor division for the tractor division
6015 - engine block
If there was no trailing letters after the 6015 then this was the first engine block casting design made by the tractor division for the tractor division in that year. That casting design could have been used to make engine block castings for as few as a couple of months or as long as several years, depending on whether the engineers decided a design change was needed, and all of the engines made from that particular design over that entire time would have the same casting number.

Transmission case casting number C5NN7005E:
Casting designed in 1965 by the tractor division for the tractor division. 7005 just means transmission housing, and the E at the end means that it was the 5th transmission housing designed by the tractor division for the tractor division that year.

As I said earlier, the model number might be near where you found the tractor serial number, up in the rougher part of the metal that wasn't ground smooth. Numbers stamped in that rougher part are harder to see and may require removing some paint with a wire wheel.

I forgot to mention that you can sometimes do a Google search on the engine block casting code to find out what tractor it was designed for. I just did that and it looks like C5NN6015 with no trailing letters should be a 3000 series gasoline engine and your engine serial number clearly says that it is a 4000 series diesel. Is there possibly a trailing "A" after the C5NN6015? It may be several inches off to the right and not even appear to be part of the same casting number, but Google searching shows that C5NN6015A was the proper casting number for a 4000 series diesel engine and the C5NN6015 without any trailing letters was a 3000 series gas engine.
