Just picked up a pretty solid '54 851 gasser with a few TLC problems. Has a 5 speed, PS, and a Wagner step-thru loader. It had just been drug out of a barn, and has a 12v battery stuck in it, isn't this tractor 6V pos ground? Still has the original generator on it. Tempted to go alt conversion, doesn't have lights so fairly easy. Also, there is a valve under the gas tank, and a petcock at the carb. No flow from the line, the valve under the tank has a screwdriver flange, is this original? I have turned the tank valve both directions and tried to blow back through it, no flow. Am I doing something wrong or?
 
They came with a 6V positive ground from the factory.

What it is today is a guessing game. There were a few 12V generators made for diesel tractors, so could possibly have been converted to that. There are folk that try to get 8-12v out of the 6V generator too.

1st, we need to figure out what you really have. The 01 series Fords did not come out until 1958. 5 speed transmissions did not come out until the 00 series in 55.

A screw type valve under the fuel tank would have been original for the 00 series, but think the 01s had the lever type. Not sure about that latter though. There would have been no petcock at the carb on any of 'em.
 
The guy who got it from the barn was calling it a 54, don't know where he got that from, probably wrong. It has the 5 speed with the verticle gate shifter. The screw valve under the tank is the main problem right not, he had disconnected the line at the carb and connected a small tank to load it up, worrying that the tank might be pretty crusty from sitting, easy as someone had added the petcock and also an inline filter before the petcock. I have done the same with anlittle garden tractor tank, it actually runs pretty well. Did these tractors not have a sediment bulb somewhere? Is the valve under the tank counter-clockwise for open? Tried to blow back through it gently with the air hose, no joy. Not much room to tinker with it without pulling the tank, kinda PITA with the loader. Tell me more about this screw valve setup please
 
Lefty loosy righty tighty. Your in tank valve screen might have varnish on it from old gas. Its a PITA to get to without a loader on it. You can raise your lift up and block it up, that might help access.
 
Lever style started Jan '60 on the 172" machines after serial 126524, and were for the larger fuel line. Sediment bowls were bolted to the inlet of the carburetor. The inline filter has to be one for gravity flow.
 
Thanks- I would prefer a sediment bowl with its petcock just ahead of the carb where it's easy to turn off and clean, and could add a see- through inline at least for awhile to catch crusties from the tank. Now if I can just get flow from the tank. Think I'll get out the old borescope and take a look around in there. This critter also has the nice segmented rear wheel weights
 

It will be tough to fit a filter bowl with shut-off in between the carb and gennie. The original bowl had no shut-off. you can buy one from this site. The original fuel line runs up between the manifold and the head. Your problem is most likely the screen inside the tank. To get at it you need to remove the tap assembly. As "rat" said, raise your loader. secure it with 2 inch angle stock secured to the rod of one of the loader lift cylinders. To gain room to get at the tap, you can loosen the nut on the screw with spring that holds the front of the tank. You can also remove the valve cover. It rolls out more easily than it appears. The original tap on the XX1s is the lever style. They usually leak when new, right out of the box. the screw type is more desirable.
 
Well, as the valve cover leak was on my list lol... Need to look at it again- if I can get flow from the tank, the rest is easy
 
The '55 to '64 sediment bowls on the carburetor did not have a petcock, the shut off was at the tank outlet. All 134" and 172" up to the change in '60 had 1/4" fuel line, the later 172" went to 5/16" line. You will have to check the thread size in your carb too see if it takes the 3/8" bolt or the 7/16" bolt then purchase the correct bolt and sediment bowl. I think this site has all items listed.
