Ford 3000 Hydraulic Pump Rebuild Question

I am rebuilding the hydraulic piston pump on my '74 Ford 3000 using a rebuild kit. The original pump was working but it leaked when lifting a heavy load. When I opened it up a small part of one of the gaskets was missing which probably explains the leak.

In reassembling the pump I have a question concerning the tripod shaped guides. The originals have a wider space at the top (the two on the right in the picture) that allows the balls to pass through. The new ones from the kit have a small space (two on the left side in picture) and the ball cannot pass through the hole. Notice on the left the tripod holds the ball in place. I am not sure which setup is correct. Should the balls be able to pass through the round section of the tripods?

Thanks.

When you assemble, make sure the ends of the tripods go into the counterbores and not press against the flat surface. I did that and collapsed the legs so they kept the balls from seating on the valve. Had to straighten them with pliers. I got the Tisco kit from this site and had to adjust most of the cages. I'll check my manual and post back later. I don't remember if the balls should pass through.

Thanks. I have a manual but it doesn't mention how to adjust the tripod guides so I am not sure what needs to be done with those. I would like to use the new ones if possible but they may need some adjusting first.
