3000 SMV mounting

Looking to find out how the SMV triangle is mounted. Anyone have an original setup? 1971 3000 diesel clam shell fenders single flasher on left fender. I do not have original seat, have a universal $100 black vinyl with side wings. Strange that I can't (easily) find a picture on the net.

Getting down to the re-wire...

Thank you

Don't know if there is an "original" setup. I've seen them mounted on the fender with a tube and thumbscrew type mount, and on the
back of the seat. Some seats come with a bracket that accepts the spade on the back of the SMV triangle like many implements use.
I've used self-tapping screws to add the spade bracket to seats like the one you have.

My 3 cylinder 4000 was a highway mower and has a ROPS, and there is a heavy gauge metal mesh attached across the uprights of the ROPS behind the seat to protect the driver from anything that might get kicked out the front of the mower. The SMV triangle is mounted with screws and nuts with washers on the front side of the mesh that are large enough to not go through the holes in the mesh.

I have seen some mounted on slotted bars bent at 90 degrees with the one side of the bend bolted to the side of the fender toward the seat and the triangle bolted to the other side of the bend facing rearward.

Best to go online to your state's gubment web site and download/read the laws on SMV signs and usage. I know here in Michigan the law requires a SMV sign to be mounted in the center of the rear of vehicle or implement. It must be visible from the rear to all traffic behind it. that means if you are pulling an implement or have something hitched, the sign has to be on the rear of that. The SMV signs sold today are offered in kits that include the sign and a bracket with all hardware. On my 8N I mount it on the back of the seat spring. I'm not sure what to tell you where on a 3000. It is also written in the Michigan law books that a SMV sign is ONLY to be used for that purpose -SLOW MOVING VEHICLE when the vehicle is to be used on state roads and highways. In other words, it isn't capable of keeping the posted speed limit. We see a lot of people who use a SMV sign to mark their mailboxes/driveways and probably unbeknownst to them they are using them illegally. I'd bet most law enforcement agencies today don't know the law either. Today there are probably other laws that state you must have amber emergency flashers installed and used as well.

In addition to Tim's tips, in most states it is actually illegal to have the SMV placard visible on the tractor when you are running it off road but close enough to the road for motorists to see it.

That sounds like a very far over reaching rule. I checked my state laws on SMV emblems and we don't have that here.

That's what my Kubota dealer told me when I bough t my BX25D. It has a bracket for the SMV that is a quick detach setup with a large plastic knob to loosen it so you don't need any tools to remove it and and he told me that was have to remove it if you're working too close to the road.

Here is the regulation for here in PA where i live. Note the portion in bold, you're not allow to display it unless you are traveling below 25mph when on a highway:

§ 4529. Slow moving vehicle emblem.

(a) General rule.--All implements of husbandry, commercial implements of husbandry and special mobile equipment designed to operate at 25 miles per hour or less and all animal-drawn vehicles shall, when traveling on a highway, display on the rear of the vehicle a reflective slow moving vehicle emblem as specified in regulations of the department. The use of the slow moving vehicle emblem shall be in addition to any other lighting devices or equipment required by this title.

(b) Limitations on use or display.--[b:69f0990ea5]No person shall use or display the slow moving vehicle emblem except as provided in this section[/b:69f0990ea5] nor shall any person display the emblem on a vehicle traveling at a speed in excess of 25 miles per hour.

Yes, we have the same law about nut to be used if going over 25. The rest of it is a BIG stretch.
