Ford 9600 tried to start for the first time.

So in March i picked up a Ford 9600 at an auction for real cheap ($2500cdn). So far i have replaced the fan bearing,fan belts, repaired the Sims dual filter assembly(bleed screw threads on left filter were stripped),pulley on alternater was junk, replaced it, and now have changed all fluids. This tractor had no batteries so it was not running at the sale.Also the tractor has a a murphy guage set up on it that has been disconnected so the wiring is a bit of a mess. So today when i attached the battery and turned the key, plus push the start button on the murphy guage, nothing happened. No power going to the key.I looked behind the dash and seen seen some wires that were cut, one other wire
had insulation melted off! Now contiplating my next move. Should i try and get a new wire harness, or a used one or just try and splice new wire onto faulty pcs. Any replies appreciated! Starting to get discouraged!
 
I'd cobble it together enough to hear it run/not run and figure out what is needed while spending the minimum of money -

is the engine loose, will it turn over?
 
I would try that firing off first, Could be coal or a diamond. someone said to change the oil in the injection pump on those. If it fires up, assess the whole tractor and think on it and then decide. I just saw a good running 8000 go for around 6500 in Ocala,florida. If you got fuel and compression, it'll blow fire. I wouldnt use ether on it. My father used to let em breathe a gas soaked rag, but they still didnt like it. Kind of like a youngin taking his first puff of a cigarette, body says NO, I dont like that.
 
No have not tried to turn it over yet, i guess i would have to get a screwdriver and shortout the solenoid. No way to get a large socket on front crank pulleys either.
 

My 9000 has a safety switch on the clutch. Much of the wiring of mine is messed up due to bypassing dash switches, and gauges, but the starter wiring was OK. I agree with temporary wiring to the solenoid using a momentary contact switch to engage it. Before trying to start it remove the side cover on the pump and make sure that it is clean and that the rack will slide back and forth. see if you can get the cold start button to go in and then release. read the manual instructions on proper use of the cold start button.
 
I forgot, dont force any gear shifting. I had an operator break the rod that goes through the right side of the tranny at the rear, I think it was the range shifter.

If you decide to part it out I just saw the lift cylinder from those models on fleabay for $1000.
 
This is a real quick way to see if the engine is locked up with less chance of damage. After checking the oil.

Turn off the fuel. You might want to loosen the injector pipe nuts.

Pull out the engine stop.

Jack up one rear axle. It would help if you do this first. Get someone to sit in the seat and press in the clutch and hold it. Put the gears through all the ranges and at each shift rotate the raised rear wheel forward to make sure it rotates smoothly. Oh, be sure the differential lock is not engaged. You want the stationary ground wheel to stay put.

If this is okay then put release the clutch, put the range and shift in the highest gear. It is easier for the tail to wag the dog this way.

Gently rock the raised free wheel in the forward direction. If it is not locked up it should rotate the engine/ fan a little.
 
The only other way I know to rotate the crankshaft without power is to remove the starter and gently engage the starter ring gear with an aluminum bar or brass covered bar or screwdriver. I would think there is no easy way to rotate the front pulley or alternator pulley on this tractor. Even if the injector nuts are loosened I don't know if the belt is tight enough to produce manual torque to rotate the crank from the front.
