Ford 901 and 961

A good 961 gas is about my favorite tractor ever. Assuming it runs and drives, make sure the clutch works well, that can get expensive. Lots of power for the size. Check the tires, 3 point, smoke or leaks, etc

Give us a little more info about it and we can tell you more.

To expand on that... 901 is the series, and the middle number is tells which transmission and pto options it has. A 961 has a 5-speed and live pto. A 951 would be a 5-speed with transmission-driven (non-live) pto. I used to have a 971 - it had a Select-O-Speed and single-speed pto. A 981 would also have the SOS, but would have a 540/1000/ground speed pto.
They are often collectively called 901's.

I have a 960 and a 961 and a 971, I can't think of anything about them that you have to be wary of. I really like the nimbleness of the NFE models, Of course many will tell you that the NFE tractors will roll right over as soon as you let the clutch out, but a wide front will tip to a pretty steep angle before the front axle stop hits. Most people will say that primarily due to the two colors that they are able average in appearance. I like the way grease and mud doesn't stick to them,

So they stay clean and shiny all the time.

I would rather be on the NFE in mud. the fronts will tend to push rather than turn the tractor, just as with the wide front, but a quick jab at the brake will bring it more easily whichever way you need to go, than a wide front. One disadvantage of the NFE though, is in a setting like skidding logs, when you come up against a big root or rock with one front tire most likely the other front is up against the same one.

I agree, Showcrop.

WF is better in most conditions but will not turn as tightly in some conditions.

Say what? You must keep yours in a show room and not work. In my experience they're no better at "staying shiny" than any other piece of farm equipment. Grease and mud always manage to stick to mine whenever they get a chance.

Hey JiCase. Is the number after your name your zip code? If so you aren't far from me. I have a 960 gas , narrow front. Love it. Friend at church has a 951 diesel, wide front. He rakes hay with his. If you are in Alabama come drive em both. It won't make your decision easier.......

I don't have it down to the since, but I feel like this tractor works better in the mud with a narrow front. When I had the wide front on it those skinny front tires seemed to sink into the mud alot more. Just my opinion.

Well...... I saw the numbers and it's a zip code for a town about an hour away. Oh well. Invite is good just a long drive!

OK NCKS, you got me. It is not really the tractor it is my secret coating. If you get one of yours painted up real nice, and ship it up here I will apply my secret formula dirt and grease repelling coating to it. Be forewarned though, it ain't cheap!

Where abouts in Minnesota? I'm in Long Prairie. Got about 6-7" of snow here this morning.

I've got a 961 diesel narrow front and I really like it! The diesels are incredibly easy on fuel and have lots of power.

long Prairie??? Think I need to come up there to pick up an eBay purchase this week, but seller hasn't finalized the details.
