Injector pump #2

Back in November, I had asked about the shim under the injector pump. I am now reassembling the engine. I installed the pump drive gear into the block. I put the pump on it, and it rocks around. I took it back off to make sure the drive was all the way in. I pulled the drive back out, then put it back in, and lightly taped on it with a small hammer, and it is down solid. I used a depth mic to check it. The drive is down in .302, and the step on the bottom of the pump is .337, which makes the drive .035 to shallow in the block for the pump. When I had originally pulled it apart, there was a .060 shim under the pump, which I had asked about. I was told on here that there should not be a shim, unless the block looked worn from being loose. But the block is not worn at all, and neither is the bottom of the pump.

What is wrong, what do I need to do to make it right.

Thanks, Pat

Boy howdy! I don't know, but wondering if someone put a pump on there that isn't OEM for that engine.

I guess if it worked properly with an .060 shim in it, I'd put one back in there.

Many years ago a guy brought me a 172 diesel he had just rebuilt because he could not get the injection pump timing to where it needed to be.
After much head scratching, I finally concluded that something was wrong with the drive gear on the cam. He then told me that he had replaced
it with a good used one during his rebuild. Further investigation in the parts book showed that the gas and diesel cams had different part
numbers - evidently he didn't know what he had purchased. After he located a diesel cam and we installed it, no more problems.

I suspect this may be why your pump has a shim under it.

Sorry! That part number no longer comes up on Ford's (NH's) website. Therefore I don't know enough to tell you if it's the correct pump for your tractor or not.

In my "Ford tractor parts catalog" "Ford motor company, Ford tractor division" say's that a Conn 9A543-HR is for a 144, and a Conn 9A543-JR is for a 172

But somewhere, here on the forum someone back around last November ? had told me that the HR is for a 172 also. But I can not find where that is written now, to recheck what I was told.

I don't believe that the cam was ever changed, to have the wrong one in it now. I just put a new front cover & seal on it since I'm changing all gaskets, to fix any leaks that may appear, and it looked as to have never been off before. The tractor had been sitting for 15 yrs.

As you can see, everything was pretty dirty. Even the fuel filter was by-past, instead of just changing the filter. I found nothing wrong with it other then a dirty filter.

I have found that a lot of things have been done to this tractor. Some good, some not so good. So I do not know if any given part on this tractor has not been changed, or farmer'd at one time. Which I have been fixing all of them as I go.

Any help, or idea's welcome! I would like to get it back to normal, without any band-aids.

Thanks, Pat

I don't know why the picture doesn't show???
