Proper carburetor for Ford 860

I just bought a 1957 Ford 860. It's a little rough around the edges but seems like a solid tractor. It starts right up but the carb seems to not be working properly. It has trouble going from no load to load situation, it tends to die if you don't give it heavy choke while letting out clutch. Adjusting per the shop manual hasn't offered much improvement. I ordered a carb kit but noticed the listings seem to all show my carb (Marvel TSX765) listed under the 600 and 700 134 CID models. It has me wondering if someone replaced the original with one that looked the same but was for the smaller engine. Does any one have info as to what MS carb models were used on the various hundred series tractors? If this carb is undersized or under jetted a rebuild isn't going to help me much. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

It's not unusual to find parts swapped from different model tractors during the last 60 years of use.

Your TSX-765 was in fact used on the smaller 134 CID tractors. What is the casting code on the lower right side of the engine block? It should be [b:b97cb7eb45]EAF 6015[/b:b97cb7eb45] for a 1957 172 CID engine or [b:b97cb7eb45]EAE 6015[/b:b97cb7eb45] if it is a 134 CID block.

The small carb used on the 800/900 series 172 CID was a TSX-706.
The early 801/901 series used a TSX-662.
The later 801/901 used the TSX-769.
Starting at SN 126524 the TSX-813 was used on 801/901/4000 and can easily be identified by the 5/16" fuel line.

There are a few copies of Marvel-Schebler manuals on the NTC site for free download. M/S part numbers prefixed with TSX; Ford basic part number is 9510 and prefix will ID module first used on. For example, TSX-33, 9N-9510, used on 39-48 models (exception is 2N Wartime and 9N Industrial models use TSX-38)Now, Bill and Andy have posted some info so I'll add that according to the M/S Manual:

TSX-706, EA9510G, B6NN9510A, 800/900 MODELS
TSX-771, 312278, 801/901 MODELS
TSX-662, 310015, 801/901 MODELS
TSX-769, 312955, 801/901 MODELS
TSX-813, CONN9510C, CONN9510G, 801/901/4000

...hope this helps...

Thanks for the help, guys! Dollar Bill you had me really worried for awhile that someone put the 134 inch engine in this tractor. The casting code is EAF-6015-J. So it looks like the right engine with the wrong carburetor. My serial number is 133976 so correct carb is a TSX 706 or 813? The mounting studs look to be 2 3/8 inches apart.

On a side note, after driving it a bit, hydraulic oil was coming out the flywheel inspection port (timing mark cover?) about halfway up the bell housing. I guess that means my clutch is submerged in oil and I need to replace the hydraulic tubes? Wonderful, it looks like I'll get lots of use out of the new shop manual I just bought from this site.

Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it.

The correct original carb is TSX-706, although a later carb would
work. Note that the serial number sequence was "reset" with the
introduction of the 801 series so you must be careful when referencing
serial numbers.

My 640 acts pretty much the same when
I apply throttle It wants to stall. If I force it
through the rough part it wants
to go full throttle.
I found the governor arm is not moving
in and out when disconnected and goosing
throttle.

I was still able to brush hog last year but it
was not holding RPM well. Was hoping it
might free up by itself but looks like I will
have to replace the governor.

Just an update, I did not see a rebuildable carb for this engine on fleabay and didn't have time to wait for one to be available. I bought a made in USA Zenith replacement, It now starts beautifully and runs much better, it cured the extreme cold bloodedness and hesitation. Well worth the investment.
