4 cylinder Ford

Help Please!I have a Ford 4 cylinder gas with very little spark. Sparking at the points about every 3rd or 4th revolution at the points and not a very bright spark when it does?

are these new points/condenser? points aren't what they used to be, very little noble metal associated with the contacts, they will oxidize just sitting around and then not spark -

make sure the points are gapped properly and if I want to clean them I use a drop of electronic contact cleaner and drag a piece of clean paper between them - I bit of 400-600grit sandpaper drug between the points can help temporarily, but the sandpaper removes the nominally non-oxidizing metal that is plated on the points so they oxidize that much faster the next time -

Check the wire going from the coil to the points where it passes through the body of the distributor. The insulation may be worn through and allowing the wire to short to ground, and every now and then the vibrations of the engine spinning might cause it to move enough that it allows some spark to reach the points.

Good advise from Pomster, below.

Sounds like classical point contact oxidization.

Never use a point file on modern points. I use an IBM card to burnish contacts. Works great. A piece of brown paper bag works as well.

hanks for the suggestions and input. I found the copper ribbon was broken to the points. Replaced ribbon and Bam. Old Blue is back on her feet. Thanks again
