I have a Ford 75 4000 SU, The steering wheel has a great deal of play. What is the correct procedure for adjusting the gears that are located on both sides of the steering gear box?

It could be a couple of things.
Assuming it has power steering someone
might have failed to stake the nut at
the top of the upper bearing and it
loosened.
Could also be that the sector gears
need adjusted.
Both are simple to fix and both are
covered in your I&T FO-31 manual.

As Ultradog says, it could be a few things. Narrowing down the symptoms to where the looseness is will help figure out what the cause is.

Does it have power steering?

When you turn the steering wheel, does the wheel rise noticeably (more than 3/16") when you turn it in one direction and lower back down when you turn it in the other?

Do the arms on the sides of the steering box move as soon as you start turning the wheel, or does the wheel turn for a bit before the arms start moving?
