Picked up this 9600 at an auction for $2500cdn. Had no batteries so was not started up. Has 8100 hrs on it. Pulled the dipstick, had oil at proper level. Also has murphy guages so it did a lot of pto work. Back tires are 20%. Just wondering what kind of surprises await me when I get it home and try to start it?....John

I have had a 9000 for about ten years. I use it only for pulling competitions. The motor is known for cylinder wall perforation due to cavitation. If your cylinders are still holding compression put coolant treatment in it. The transmission is known for breaking shift forks. Good luck with it and post back about what you find.

take inspection cover off inj pump clean the rack lube it I have seen racks stick open after setting. never heard shifting fork problems on a 9600, but it doesn't matter now you own it.fire it up and see what you bought.make sure cold start over fuel button comes out.

Shift forks were problematic on any 8000-9600. A dealer with access to 1970s vintage service bulletins would find at least a few bulletins addressing the issue.

My 9000 had more hours, and had been sitting for seven years, we just put a battery in her, made sure that fuel was up into the pump, and she fired right up and ran after cranking for maybe five seconds.
