High oil pressure

Hello- I just completely rebuilt 1965 Ford 3000 diesel engine. It started up fine and when I increased engine rpm after about 15 seconds of
operation, the gasket for the oil filter adapter kit blew out an oil started spewing out. I took off the adapter kit and reset the gasket and
re-torqued to 120 ft-lbs. It blew out again. The gasket is made out of thin rubber.
The gasket was damaged and I currently have one on order from YT.
My concern is that one of the oil passages in the crankshaft (which was just reground) may be clogged which would cause very high oil
pressure. I just realized I never checked to make sure the passages were clear.
Any advice? Would you just put a new gasket on and re-start?...or would you pull things apart and check why the pressure is so high?

Did you replace the oil pump? Did you check the relief valve in the oil pump? Have you verified the current oil pressure with a good, known gauge? Is oil reaching the rocker shaft?

Oil pump has a relief valve that should dump overpressure there, ahead of the filter.

Did you replace the pump, pump may be defective, or if the old one has been reused, a piece of debris may have stuck the relief valve.

One the other hand, a crankshaft, especially a reground one SHOULD have the passages cleaned thoroughly with a long brush made for the purpose and solvent to be SURE they are clean of grinding material or other debris before intallation, but I highly doubt that's causing your gasket problem.

Thanks Bob. I used the same oil pump that came out of the engine. It has been sitting on my barn bench since November, so it may be very likely that the pressure relief froze. I assume its just a ball and a spring?? or is it more complicated?

Thanks Rick. No same oil pump. Good question on oil reaching the rockers. I will check when I get the new gasket.

Pressure relief valves inside oil pumps typically don't just decide to stick closed while sitting for a few months. Suggest getting a manual gauge on this engine before jumping to any conclusions.
