67 2000 vs 72 2000

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. gas; 4/1 trans....I found what's advertised as a 72 2000 Ford gasser in good running condition just like my 67 model and am considering buying the newer one and selling the older. Question is...is there much difference between the 67 model I have and the 72 model. Cost would be about a wash since I think I can sell my 67 for even a bit more than the 72 would cost. Also, the 72 model comes with a bush hog (although I already have one) and also appears to have a high/low transmission. Assuming the 72 is in as good a shape as my 67, is it worth it to go for the 'newer' tractor? Mainly was interested in finding out if a lot of improvements had been made over the 5 year age difference or not. Thanks.

Forgot to ask....my current 67 model 2000 is a 4 speed and I understand is not a good match for use with a tiller (goes too fast even in low gear). Would the later model 72 with what appears to be 8 speeds be a good candidate for a tiller? Thanks.

All things equal, an 8 speed is way way better than the 4 speed... so if the "wear condition" is the same, go for the 8 speed. Again, an 8 speed is very useable, and a 4 speed is difficult in many situations...

That being said... I feel that even an 8 speed is a bit fast for a tiller... but much closer than a 4 speed would be.

I prefer the sos over the 8 speed for tilling, or even better a "creeper range" transmission like in my 6640. SOS transmission tractorss are a lot harder to sell and very difficult to get parts for..

The 4-speed was dropped in I think '68, and replaced
by a 6-speed for the bsse transmission. So all of
them (except SOS, of course) wpuld be twin stick.
Would need to check if it has live pto or not.
Definitely an upgrade. Ifyou can do it for zero net
cost, I'd do it.

The 72 will have a few advancements. I think by
then they had the heavier square rear axles so
could have differential lock. There was no
provision for diff lock on the early ones with
round axle housings (trumpets).
The later front bolster will be heavier and
more suitable for loader work.
8 sp is a big upgrade. 1st gear in the 4 speed
in the 3 cyl tractors is almost goofy fast.
If either has power steering I would definately
transfer it to the tractor youre going to keep.
There is a few other small differences between
them. Oil filter and tin.
I prefer the old pre 4/68 tin but may be in
minority there.

I used a rototiller with my 3000. It got the job done, but I would have liked it slower. Maybe
I was trying to be too careful.

Approximately 1962-64 Dextas had a low speed first gear that is best for rototilling.
About 1.0 mph. Earlier model Dextas were also too fast.

99% of Dextas are diesels.

Here are the transmission speeds for the 2000,3000 tractors

Thank you for the gear diagrams and speeds, very interesting. I test drove the tractor today and, in low first, in comparison my 4 speed, it truly creeps along. The tractor does have the square rear axles, but no power steering. It seems to be in overall good shape and I think I will be buying it and selling my '67. Stay tuned.

A quick update....the tractor owner has postponed selling the tractor until the end of May and I told her I would buy it then. Time will tell. The good news is that I got the name of her mobile mechanic (a rare bird where I live) and he's coming over Sunday to see if he can get my 67 going for me. Stay tuned.

Update addendum....I was checking CraigsList for tractors and, lo and behold, the seller of the 72 Ford 2000 has relisted the tractor for $4500, up from $3500 earlier in the week and up from the original posting of $2500. I met the lady and my impression was that she wasn't much for playing games so I assume someone told her she was selling way too low at $3500 so she relisted it at $4500. It would have been nice if she had simply told me that she made a mistake with the original listing. In the meantime, I got my 1967 Ford 2000 cranked this afternoon and it seems to be running very well. Still would have liked to have that 8 speed 1972 model and am disappointed in the seller so am back at scanning CL for a good deal on an upgrade.

Update....seller has now increased the price of the tractor and bush hog to $5000. Same ad, same tractor, higher price. Not nearly the bargain it would have been at the original $2500 asking price. I think this is now one that has gotten away.

Depending on what brand the bush hog is $3500 for a gas 2000 is top price around here.
Sounds like someone is blowing smoke at her, just wait a while and the price will come back down when no one even bothers to call at those dream prices.

Yes, waiting is my plan. It's a great tractor and in good shape and we agreed on a price of $3200 Sunday afternoon but I think you are right...smoke in the ear. The bush hog is a 4' model with a label called Clipper 400. Doesn't look very heavy duty but she was using it to mow some small pastures so I guess it was a good match for the tractor for her.

I went thru the same deal when I brought my 3000. A year later a bud told me she had not sold it I called her and said I would take it at my original offer, She said a guy is coming at 11 Saturday to look at if if he did not buy it she would call me and take my offer. She called I jumped in the truck and loaded it up when I went to pay her she said are you gonna come back for the equipment I said does it go with it she said YES :SHOCK" At that point she was done with tire kickers and wanted it all gone :)

Don't give up hope it may never sale at the inflated price...
