I tried to crank the tractor with the battery. Now the starter bendix is engaged and wont release even with the engine running. I cant seem to get it out while its engaged. Do I need to take the starter apart to remove it?

Had the same problem when I installed an industrial motor
in my 821 backhoe. It was a bear to remove but I, like you,
finally did it.

Stood starter up and applied P blast on bendix for a few weeks.
And rotated bendix to free. Then set timing to optimum and replaced starter solenoid. A good charged battery and engine
now starts on first RPM. Haven't seen problem recur.
