i am evaluating machines shops for 401 rebuild. my parts mfg has flanged & un-flanged liners that are thicker than ford-nh. one
machine shop wants to counter bore from bottom and insert liner. not sure how he attaches it ? but seems like one is working
against gravity with this method. from people that have done 401 w/ sleeves how did you do it ?

My machinist uses a heavy wall sleeve, 1/8 in thick or so,bores the block all the way through-presses the sleeves in-hones the sleeve to size and decks the block and top of sleeves, never had any problem and we have done a bunch.

With unflanged sleeves you bore and leave a lip at the bottom to stop the sleeve from moving down the sleeve is cut flush with the deck and the head stops the sleeve moveing up

Ditto what welding man said. I've had more 401 blocks sleeved than I care to recall, and have never had a problem with a thick wall sleeve coming back to bite me. It costs more up front because you're essentially boring the block twice, but it's the best way in my opinion. Pressing in sized thin-wall sleeves sometimes leads to distortion.
