Has anyone out there ever considered shaving the balancer to engine mount to take out the wear in the gears?
 
You've got to grind back the tips of the gears, or otherwise they'll be riding on the part of the mating gear that isn't worn, and that would be bad for noise and metal stress.
 
I might just check the next one( if I dont forget) that I work on with plastigauge and see what the clearance is. We had one tractor that we called the singer because it had worn balancer bearings. That was before we knew what it was. It had 38" rears and a single front wheel.
