Does anyone know if you can remove a bearing collar From one of these axles without splitting the collar? I have an old spare axle that I can sacrifice. Maybe try blowing the bolts out with a torch? I just wondered what y'all have tried.

hat do bolts have to do with the collar?

The manual shows the bolts sticking through the collar. I want to remove the collar without having to split it, I need it intact for another axle. Would the wax trick work on it?

here is the retainer and there is the collar (ring). The retainer has bolts, the collar is a solid ring (like wedding band, except larger & harder metal) and is inboard of the retainer and the axle bearing. You can drill the collar & split it or you can cut it off of the axle with a torch.

Why are you trying to blow the bolts out instead of removing the collar? I'm confused.

All I can say is that both the collar and the wheel bearing are a tight press fit on the shaft. It takes a MASSIVE puller to be able to pull both of those off without cutting or at least warming up either one beforehand.

Someone here posted a really cool press attachment about a year ago as I recall. It was to be used with a press. Anyone know how to find that pic?

Perhaps with the right special tools/fixtures, it might be possible but considering the price of a new collar, hardly worth the effort.

Where can i buy a new collar?

I looked at the manual again. I thought they were splitting the retainer but i see its the wedding band collar inside the retainer.

I doubt it's possible at all. I did my 2000 a while back and got new collars. I miked everything while I had it apart. The new collars were .002 smaller, way too much to press off, and the area on the axle where the collar seats was ground on a taper. So they REALLY hold. And with the collars off it was still a struggle to pull the bearings. I made up a puller similar to the Nuday shown in the manual.

The press fit collar is a "one time use" item.

I can post a drawing of the puller I made for the 9-stud flange on the 2000 if you want. Those collars are shrink fit. You have to heat them pretty good, beyond blue till they turn gray, then get them on fast and hold till they cool some. I used a temp stick to get the heat right..

IIRC, the shop manual says deep cherry red, about 750 degrees F.

Too hot and they will not stay on and not hot enough and they will not go on without excessive force.
