Four speed jumping out of fourth

Bought an 801 with broken four speed. I had a another complete trans out of my 601, it had coarse spline output. Broken trans was fine spline. I opted to swap output shaft. Everything looked fine when I had it apart. Jumps out of fourth gear now. I've had the cover off several times even changing the cover from another trans. Any ideas what maybe wrong or what I may have done wrong? It just feels like I doesn't go far enough in.

Did you slide fourth all the way in when you had the cover off and did it seem locked in? It could be a worn out shifting collar or shifting mechanism wear or worn out shift shaft detent ball mechanism. I would pull cover and hand shift all the way in and then replace cover and see if it stays in gear. Its always gear pressure that kicks a manual gear out of its lock. They will kick out either going up hill or down hill depending on the tranny. It could be a worn out shift cover. I think that pin in the shift handle is replaceable which will take some play out. Also look at the end of the shift stick for wear.

How do the shift gates line up in neutral... They should be dead on... John smith posted a good write up after I posted this... His was much better then mine..

The shift gate should align in this pix a shift fork is bent fork 1-3... How does the shifter look were it fits into the shift gates is it bent/worn...

Great picture, I'll check the alignment. I have had the cover off several times I took one off of another
trans that seemed to help some as it wouldn't jump out quite as easily. Shifting it with cover off it
appears to go all the way in. I don't know if this trans was doing this before in the 601. I bought it
with motor bad and swapped in 172 motor and 5 speed. Thank you for your help.

I'll try that. With cover off it appears to go all the way in. Collar and engagement teeth looked good when I had it apart. Thank you

Other than looking at the gate in neutral I doubt you can tell if a fork is bent other than taking it out and comparing it to a good one. The gate alignment is a tell tell sign tho... With the shifter out YES even with a issue (bent fork) it will look and shift fine because you are not limited to mechanical shifter range
