172 ci govenor shaft arm removal for oil leak

So I have a leak coming from the govenor arm at the bottom where it goes into the timing chain area. .I would like to replace
the worn out seal but first have to get the arm off. There is a pin to remove with a punch to get the arm of the shaft. Taking
out many many many pins in my life I have never ever ever seen such a pin in so tight. I stopped trying as I did not want to
bend anything inside the housing.next I will remove the cover that it goes into and try to put the arm in a vice close to the
pin so I can drive it out . Has anyone ever got one out without clamping the arm in a vice?..What did they do ? freeze the pin
and drive it in in the factory ? seems like a little of over kill to me . A simple splined and a matching arm would have been
enough. .even if they had to put a clamp .Has anyone ever had this much trouble getting one out .and how do I or where do I get
the shaft seal seperately ? does it come with a gasket set or can it be bought by itself?..thanks

even though there is a visible pin the arm and shaft are one item and not intended to be separated, the complete cover will have to be removed then it is self explanatory how to remove. if you owned a service manual it would also be clear on the disassemble procedure.

you will find that the shaft will likely be worn were it rotates in the needle bearings which also should be replaced when you replace the shaft and arm assembly.

I thought the shaft was available again through ford but I am mistaken, the last one that I had apart some years ago I separated the arm and shaft and machined a new shaft.

If it is like the one on mine there isn’t a needle bearing but a bushing in the housing that’s not
sold, it comes in the new housing cover, but I doubt that you need that. All I did was replace the
seal part # EAF18183B, but you need to take the cover off to get the shaft out. But to get the shaft
out you need to drive the pin out of the handle so you can turn it so as to get the pin out of the fork
unless yours has a bolt instead of a pin. Even after I got the pin out of the lever it would not come off,
I had to tap it with hammer to get it to turn enough so I could get the pin in the fork at the right angle
to come out. Once I got the shaft out I put it in the vise and hammered the lever off and then wire brushed it so it would go back with ease. I don’t know what housing gasket you need as you didn’t say
what year you are working on, I think they made a change in 58? I know some those pins can be a bear
to get out!
