3 wire gm alt on a 6610 wiring help

old alternator went out on diesel 6610 and replacing it with a 3 wire gm alternator. could yall tell me if i understand the wiring correctly.

the #1 terminal will be a wire going to the on side of the key switch with either a diode or idiot light in it. (which do yall prefer?)
the #2 loops down to the bat terminal

the wire from the bat terminal goes to the starter terminal where the cable hooks since i am putting a volt meter on the dash.

and as far as hooking up the volt meter i just need a wire from the on side of key to the plus terminal of the gauge and a ground wire from the neg. termianl to a good ground correct?

thanks for the help again guys

Your good to go.Use idiot light between alt number one terminal and run position at key switch.Run at least a twelve gauge wire from bat terminal on alt to batt feed on large post on starter.I like to run a 60 amp heavy fuse in this curcuit. Also best to run number two wire on alternator to main batt feed on starter as well (better way for alt to sense system voltage).

You are right on the wiring.

I have 1992 5610 series II. It still has the original alternator with internal regulator, and charge light for indicator.

If you have the charge indicator light on yours, use it to excite the GM alternator. On mine it is a small brown/yellow wire at the alternator. If not, go from Alternator #1 to switched side of key switch. If you have old alternator with external regulator there will be a switched wire at the regulator. Diode or light is not functionally necessary with a Diesel, but would give surge protection to alternator internal diodes.

You can connect charge output wire from old alternator to new alternator. If you are eliminating an ammeter you could tie the wires together and insulate them.

If your old alternator used a temp sensor under the battery, either insulate the end of that wire at the alternator, or disconnect the source end of it.

I replaced the lucas alternator on my 7710 with a GM 3 wire kept the output wire jumper Terminal 2 to the out put wire. On my tractor ther was a small black wire that was the charge light that went to terminal 1

Don't over think this.... If it's a later model (black decal), particularly with a cab... I wouldn't alter the wiring. The big one goes to BAT,, terminal 2 is doubled back to the BAT terminal.. and terminal 1 goes to the sense wire (idiot light). Tape the rest of them up. Easiest way to figure out the wires is splice them together with the key on and whatever lights up the bulb is the sense wire.
If you were dealing with an early model tractor, open station.. that had a 32 amp motorolla... I MIGHT rewire... However, most I've done have had at least 50 amp alts originally... so I don't fret about putting a 63 amp Delco on there.
