Transmission Swap Ford 555 / Ford 655a

Howdy,

Will a torque converter synchromesh transmission from a Ford 655A backhoe fit in a Ford 555 Backhoe with torque converter transmission?

They share the same bellhousing pattern, but I think they are like the ag tractors - the 4-cylinder models use larger transmission and rear end housings, so a 3-cylinder transmission will not bolt up to a 4-cylinder rear end.

Thanks fordfarmer, I felt certain that something would not mate up.

If we took the entire back end (torque converter/transmission/rear end) of the 655A, I presume it would mate up to the 201 engine/front end of the 555?.

Thanks again.

The 555, and 655A transmission housing, rear end center housing, and axle housings all have the same part numbers. According to the parts books.

I seem to remember the torque converter stall speeds are different between the models. If you care. But the transmissions are the same.
