Search is over. Our friend found a
950 D and picked it up yesterday.
We went by after church to take a
look. Tractor has a 5 speed
transmission but no live PTO. Hood
says 941. He got the 4 speed
transmission as part of the deal.Tie rod is
Farmerized! Says he may leave it.

Doesn't look too bad to me. Is the front end a two piece unit?
If so it would be from a very late x00 or an x01.

Sounds like the trans has been changed, so the numbers
there are probably not of much value for identification.
Sheet metal looks to be x00 to me, even if decals say x01.

Correct about the x5x and x6x non-live/live PTO. Same
tractors, same trans, sans the expensive two stage clutch.

Are those 13.6 x 28's on the PA rims? Mine are 14.9 which
are not the right size for the tractor but look taller than those.

(quoted from post at 22:07:08 02/18/18) So how does one get a 5-speed with no live PTO? Did Ford make such a beast, or did they just not put a double clutch in it? I'm confused.

Bern! I'm surprised that you didn't know this. The 00 and 01 series were both available with a non-live PTO in a 5 speed. By the early 000 series, I believe the live PTO 5 speed was the only 5 speed they offered.

Royce that poor tractor has parts
from at least 6 different
tractors. No telling what it
really is! This guy saw my 960 at
our church fall festival over a
year ago and had been looking for
a 900 series since then. He has a
small Alice Chalmers that he rakes
and teds hay with. Has a fairly
big new Holland for cutting and
front loader work. Just wanted
this for the " cool factor" his
words! Going to rake and ted hay
with it. I told him when he is in
the field by the road plan on
stopping to talk to folks alot!!
Not sure what tires are on it but
they are almost new.

"that poor tractor has parts from at least 6 different tractors."

Parts get switched around a lot. Usually doesn't hurt a thing.
The engine may have came from a 741, being diesel.
x00 tractors didn't have a diesel option that I know of.

I took it for a drive yesterday.
Runs nice. Steering is easy. No
PS. Needs a taller exhaust
pipe, blows right it your face as
it is. It's a neat old beast!

Ford built the Jubilees the year I was born so by rights I should hanker for one of those. Instead, I'll join you in sticking to the 65+ tractors. I find them more interesting - if only for the miriad types and options they had.

Not likely to have been from a 7x1... the 144 diesels
were much less common than 172's.
I agree that swapping parts usually doesn't hurt
anything. It may not be "correct", but as long as it
works and the owner is happy. ..

BIL used to have a 961D & shared work w/his brother. In the spring they would fuel up the 961D w/3x14's & brother's 4010D w/4x14's & head out to plow. Mid-morning they would take the JD back to the house for coffee & fuel. Same thing at noon & mid-afternoon. At evening chore time he would finally bring the Ford back to fuel it for the next day! Hard to beat 10 gallons of diesel in a 10 hour day plowing!

I was born the same year as the -00 series, dad replaced his 8N with a 850 5 spd non live pto in 62.
I grew up on that tractor and it was used here on the farm until the 80's when my brother sold it.
Although I spent a good part of my youth working with and on that 850, I also am more familiar with the 65-later -000 series I've owned for the past 25+ years.

The block casting numbers would give some idea as to what size it is and approximate year it was made.

The x5x models have the 5 speed, but not the 12-15 parts that create the second clutch circuit in the tranny.

The x6x models are the 5 speed live (2 stage) setup.

hundred and '01 series 5 speeds had both live and non-live PTO options. The non-live models had a 5 as the middle digit in the model number and the live PTO models had a 6 as the middle digit.

I think that when they came out with the 4 cylinder 2000 and 4000 series, or shortly thereafter, they dropped the non-live PTO option on the 5 speeds.
