Old style Ford 4000 4 cyl diesel - seals in injector pump

I finally got around to pulling the injector pump out of my old style Ford 4000 4 cylinder diesel tractor. I am getting diesel fuel into my crankcase oil. I understand that this is probably a result of leaking seals on the input shaft to the injector pump. I got two of the main shaft seals and one large O-ring seal.

The pump is a Roosa Master DB04-2933. I thought that I would be able to pull the drive shaft out of the pump by hand and replace the three seals. In fact, the drive shaft does not simply pull out of the pump. Upon further examination of a parts catalog, it looks like there's a shaft retaining ring on the drive shaft inside the pump that needs to come off the shaft to allow it to come out of the pump.

I've looked at a bunch of youtubes on disassembly of the pump, but none of them were step-by-step procedures for removing the drive shaft.

I think I might be in over my head since I'm reluctant to try to remove the distribution head off the pump to get inside of it to remove the retaining ring.

Any advice?

Thanks,

What year of tractor? Dieseltech is the one you need to talk to. Put his name in the search bar, it might come up with his email. Dont mess with that head.

river,

I'm not sure of the date of the tractor. The old style, 4 cylinders were made from 1961 (or maybe 1962) - 1964. The area behind the starter where the serial number is supposed to be has been completely obliterated from battery acid. I've tried repeatedly to get something from that area, but it's simply ruined from the acid.

The shaft uses an O ring for the retaining ring, just needs to be pulled on harder. If you see any metal shavings on the upper umbrella seal, pump needs more repair than just the seals..

Thanks again, Guys, for the help.

Dieseltech - as always, you were exactly right about pulling the input shaft out of the pump. I just pulled a little harder than I had pulled before, and it came right out.

riverroadrat - you too, were just right about the smaller o-ring on the input shaft. The parts diagram wasn't clear about the existence of the o-ring, so I had not ordered one when I ordered the other three seals. I have one on order right now and hope to have it in later this week.

I installed the two "umbrella" seals and the large o-ring that goes on the bottom of the pump housing. Now, when the last o-ring arrives, I hope to put the pump back in and see if it works.

Thanks again,

I have a question.
I have my pump off my tractor. I did not know that the shaft into the pump pulled out. Is this something I should do, since I have it off, and replace the O-rings and the umbrella seal? Where can I get these seals. I don't see them in my parts manual exploded view of the pump.

Thanks, Pat

You can likely buy an entire seal kit for your pump on eBay for $30 - $40. Any diesel pump shop ought to have one or maybe even individual pieces of it as well.

I was just looking to replace a couple of seals on the shaft since I have it off. Not rebuild it, I will if it has a problem after I get it running, if it needs to be. I need to put my money else where on my tractor.

Thanks, Pat

It's good to be frugal. However, I will lay you odds that if the shaft seals are shot, the governor ring is as well or soon will be. It would also be part of the pump seal kit for $30 - $40.

I didn't pull mine to do any repairs to it. I removed it to paint the pump, and around behind it. I pulled everything on the engine & tractor off to paint it. I just figured since it was off, I could just through new seals on the shaft, as I have been doing to everything I've pulled.

I don't want to open something that does not need it, and then causing to make something I have to now fix. I have enough of that already. My money bucket, I mean cup, does have a shallow bottom to I, and my money stretcher is working over time.
