Is there a place on the flat deck TLB units where the model, serial number and unit code is hand stamped like the Ag tractors? The clutch housing boss is bare and the data plate is gone from its home on the left side of the steering console. Neither the op manual or service manual have any references to an alternate location.

I'm not sure on that late of a model, but earlier industrial models had the numbers stamped into the same flat spot near the starter as the ag models.

I have a backhoe later than the 555b but basically similar, a 455d
(same 201 CID 3 cylinder diesel). The model code, date code, and
serial number is in the usual Ford location that you mention, on the
flat spot to the rear of the starter. It was a real pain in the neck
to read (literally - had to crane my neck). The "vehicle
identification plate" as described in the operators manual as being on
the left hand side of the steering console wasn't there and as far as
I can tell never was.

The earlier ag & Industrial models also had a foil sticker with the numbers on the underside of the right side hood panel. You might check there as well.

Andy claimed that the data plate that should be on the dash according to the manual wasn't there on his, and looked like it never was, so I thought that maybe they might be under the hood where the earlier ones were. have you checked there on yours?

Are you sure you're checking the right spot on the bell housing, just above and slightly to the rear of the tractor from the starter? On a lot of industrial models it is hidden behind the loader frame upright and very hard to see as Andy said.
