Taking apart the front end on my 640 to try and repair the front axle that I discovered was cracked. Having a hard time unscrewing the pivot pin..soaking now in PB blaster. May try a little heat after while. Can this axle be welded ?

Looks good.
Cheaper than a used axle too.

I know what you mean Royse, it doesn't match up with the New holland parts breakdown for a 640. The pin measurement you see in the pic does match the pin in the YT parts.

What bothers me is the measurement I get on the inside of the front axle. I don't see a replacement bushing that matches my measurements. Not even close

Glad you got it apart, now to get it back together.

What's throwing me is that pin. It just doesn't look right to me.

It looks like the axle pin on my 3000, not my NAA or earlier.

It's been too long since I did my 640 to remember what it looked

like, but I'll take a look through my pictures and see if I can find it.

Well its apart finally in pieces. Ended up cutting it out with my grinder and a thin cutoff wheel. The center pin was totally bonded to the outer sleeve so I was never gonna get it apart by unscrewing it. Now to weld up the axle and order in new parts to remount it.

Not much threads left in the Bolster

Now Royse... threads are still visible but the whole thing just spins. Pretty sure the threads are stripped out. I have tried heating and beating at this point... does no good. Cutting torch is probably the next step

I'm open to suggestions

The earlier tractors had a pin or a bolt holding them in with no
threads to back them out and nothing to get a hold of to pull on really.

So what I did with those is take the bolster off the front of the

engine and drive them out from the back side once I got them
to turn a little side-to-side.

If yours has backed out so that the threads are clear, maybe you

can do the same thing with it now that it's loose.

Not sure if theirs a sleeve on the pivot pin but maybe the threads on the end of the pin have stripped out so I'm just spinning in one spot. Not sure, It screws back in ok

I finally got the 1 5/8" nut loose on the pivot pin and backed out a bit till it ran outta threads but there seems to be a sleeve on the pin that is of course rusted on so it all just turns but won't back out. been heating and beating but she is a no go for now. any suggestions out there??

I had a pin that was a bear. I actually welded a piece of 1/2" thick wall tube that was cut to fit in the slot to the pin. After that it took a pry bar about 4' long with heat to move it. It came out hard most of the way. Let it cool a little after heating.

Do you have a loader on the tractor? If you do, replace the axle.

Those are made of a good drop forged steel.
Yes, they can easily be be welded. Vee it out good and fill it with weld.
I would use 7018 rod. No special pre or post heat needed.
