power steering pump pulley

What is the best way to remove the pulley from a power steering pump. It seems to be very tight on the shaft. I don't want to break the cast pulley, doing it wrong. When there is a easier or better way, then using a three finger puller.

'63 4000 diesel. Pump is in picture. I don't know what type pump it is by name.

I have driven them off from the backside with a long punch against the center part of the hub. Keep it rotated. A heat gun will help a lot. Probably best to use the puller and then drive it from behind. It has to come straight pretty much to the end.

Use a puller, but don't use TOO much force - get it tight, then a punch on the back side like riveroadrat said. I did one last
winter. It's a tapered shaft, so once it moves, it comes right off.

No puller.

Remove the nut. Hold the pump by the pulley just above the bench with one hand and strike the end o the shaft with a brass hammer. It will pop right off.

(quoted from post at 11:34:02 02/10/18) Looks to me like a tweaker was getting ready to relieve you of your radiator until he got interrupted!

Hmmm, what do you mean?

I got it off. I put my puller on it, went to snug it up with a wench, and it just turned off. Never put any pressure on it.

But! I found that it has a chunk out of the back side.

So, does anyone have a pulley that they don't need.

A Browning pulley will work, I think tsc has them. Just get your size and offset right. The pump can be spaced in or out a little.

Ford used this pulley on the Eaton pump from '57 to '67-8. They used it on all the cars & trucks also, besides tractors. Most were Eaton pumps, and some were Ford pumps, but mostly Eaton. I can also buy custom aluminum pulleys for around $40.00 on up, online. I would rather get one from someone on here, and give them the money instead. Or I will check out the auto yards around here.

Thanks, Pat

Does anyone have a pulley they are willing to give up. I live on a very small fixed income. I am trying to fix all the things the po did to my tractor. So if someone wants to get a few dollars, and that could help me out cheaper, please e-mail me.

My e-mail; [email protected]

Thanks, Pat
