good and bad about select o speed..

I have a 1964 Rowcrop 4000 with the SOS and would like to replace the filter. Older posts from 2014 indicated someone was attempting to find a substitute for this filter. Has anyone come up with a solution?
 
The filters on the pre-'65 SOS tractors are about worthless. They only filter a fraction of the oil flow, and even that is after the oil has gone through the control valve. In my opinion, they're almost not worth the effort to change.
 
The early S-O-S filters are once again available from Dennis Carpenter.

Yes, the filter is in the return line to the sump and is far than ideal but it is better than nothing.

Since the filter is beneath the top cover it is rarely, if ever changed and is, no doubt, in bypass mode.

DO NOT attempt to remove the top cover until you have procured a proper Ford service manual and have read and understood the R & R procedures.

Be certain to clean the inlet strainer at the same time.

Some 6 months ago someone posted about the external filter that he had installed on his.
 

Consider also that your transmission oil, unless the tractor is used frequently and for hours at a time that the oil will be impacted more by condensation inside than by use, dictating changes on very few hours use.

Any further conversation on this? :) I have to change the oil on my '59 as soon as the weather warms and changing the filter seems to add exponentially to the difficulty of the job. You say that they are "almost" not worth the effort to change. Does that mean they get changed reluctantly, or that you'd actually go ahead and change the fluid and not change the filter? :)
 
Pulling the top cover on a 2000-4000 SOS is not a easy job for the first timer. Myself, I'd have no problem, and if it was mine, I likely
would replace the filter, even as worthless as it seems to be, simply because I've done this job numerous times.

If you've never removed the top cover on one of these before, you'll likely end up cursing the engineer who ever designed a filter in that
location if you do end up doing the job. On top of that, once you study where the filter sits in the system, and realize that it only filters
a fraction of the total pump oil flow, there's a good chance you'll really feel that the job was a lot of time and frustration for nothing.
 
Most have probably never been changed in the last 30+ years or so. As a result, they are long since clogged and are in bypass mode.

I change mine.

Of course you will want to want to thoroughly clean the suction strainer as well.

Where is the suction strainer?

Middle of left side waaaay down at the bottom.

Some SOS transmissions did not have separate drain plugs. The inlet strainer assembly doubled as the transmission drain on these. Remove the clip and use a ¼" bolt threaded into the assembly to twist and pull it out/
 

But before you drain it get it hot, so that you will suspend the incredible amount of sludge that is on the bottom of the case.

That's the way my 1961 drain is. I usually park the tractor tilted slightly to the left for better drainage.
