'64 4000 Bendix drive

I have spun this bendix way up there in speed and it wont retract. Now I cant get it off to replace it. I have taken off the older style ones easily. This is a smaller one than what I've seen. I cant seem to find the spring release to push down and get the pin out.
 
If you are talking about the newer drive that just has what looks like a band of sheet metal that holds the pin in, good luck! I had my first experience with one of those a couple of weeks ago helping a friend with his tractor and I had a heck of a time getting the old one off and getting the new one on without messing it up permanently. The old one was spun out but the new one was not but both were a pain to get off or on. Hopefully someone with more experience on the new drives will be along shortly to give you more help. Greg NE
 
That sounds like it, I guess they want you to buy a new starter. I think those foreign parts makers do that to aggravate Americans, more likely its out the door and now its your problem. I found a snap ring I can take out but dont know if I can reassemble. I helped my father work on the older ones but we didnt know about the spinning trick back then.

Try spinning it up with a 12 volt battery. Clamp the starter to your work bench to prevent counter rotation - Bendix needs the inertia of a sudden stop in order to retract.

If that doesn't work, cut it off with an abrasive wheel.
