I have a '63 4000 172 diesel SOS.

I want to change the exhaust from vertical, to horizontal.

YT has a 1 3/4" extension pipe. But is say's not for a rowcrop. What is the difference in them. I don't see to be anything.

Thanks, Pat

YT list a pipe(311466) fitting a row crop, not fitting a, S.O.S. which should be true. The pipe extension for a SOS has a bend in it to go around the protruding part of the transmission on that side. But they don't list the pipe from the muffler to the exhaust pipe, which you should also need. Ford never did furnish a horizontal exhaust system for a diesel.

Either way, I have way to many trees, and bushes to mow around, that the vertical will snag on. So I'm going to either buy a horizontal pipe, or make the pipe. Then I only have to worry about the air cleaner hitting.

The extension pipe would be the only thing to go around the SOS. I believe the exhaust pipe should be the same, correct?

Someone must have switched theirs, to know. Before I order one.

Remember that a row crop 4000 uses a different exhaust pipe then does a 4000 utility. 1.75 diameter

Is mine a crop row tractor? You tell me. I thought if it had adjustable tire width, it was.

The inside of the muffler is 1 3/4" and the outside of the exhaust pipe is 1 3/4".

I had a 8N, and a 9N, but I had them back is early '80's. I'm learning as I go.

8 had a dump bucket, and the 9 had hydraulic loader with a snow bucket. I moved 225 tandem truck loads of dirt with them, to fix my wet backyard. That was in Maplewood, Mn next to the mall.

The 8 was blue, and the 9 was red. I believe they were both 9's. But was told the blue was a 8, and I bought it before the 9.

TinCan, yours is not a row crop. It is a "general purpose" or "all purpose" ag chassis model. A row crop has drop down final drives at the ends of the rear axles so that the main part of the rear axle is higher than the centers of the rear wheels. The row crops also had a different front axle setup, either a tricycle pedestal with single or double wheels under it, or a "wide front axle" assembly which is an adjustable width axle sort of similar to the ag chassis front axle in how you adjust the width, but different, with much shorter radius rods that don't go back to the transmission case. (I hope that makes sense). The row crops all had a single steering arm on the right side also, which went up to an arm on the right side of the nose of the tractor and there was a gearbox in the nose that turned the pedestal or linkage for the wide front end.

Yes you made sense to me. I now understand the differences.

Learned something new again! This old dog learns new tricks all the time!
Just don't throw something you want. You'll have to fetch it yourself. lol

Thanks, Pat

The red tractor in this photo does not look like a 9N. The hubs, while pretty fuzzy, appear to be 8N or later hubs.

This is a gas tractor (Jubilee) but I decided to go simple. Keeps the water out of the exhaust pipe and blows exhaust away from the tractor when running. Doesn't require a bunch of extra pipe.
