Recently came by what I was told to be a 4040 industrial. Is this correct? Flat spot behind starter says, 40308 with diamond165365diamond below. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The 4030 in 40308 means that it is a 4030, which would be a 1961-1962 4000 series light industrial model. The 4040 was the heavy industrial model. The last digit should say what type of transmission and PTO it has, but I can't find any reference to what an 8 means.

165365 is the serial number which should be a 1962 serial number.

Now those numbers are stamped into the transmission so they only tell you about the tractor that the transmission was in when it left the factory, so if it has the heavier duty front axle it might be a 4040 that had a transmission swapped in from a 4030.

Some pictures of the front axle would help us be able to tell you for sure which model tractor it is.

Here's a photo of my 4030 light Industrial and my 4040 HD industrial Note the frame and heavy cast iron nose on the 4040.

That's definitely a 4030 light industrial from the sheet metal and front axle. It's a good strong loader tractor. It has 3 point lift and PTO, so it probably wasn't abused by having a backhoe on it. What transmission does it have?

(quoted from post at 11:40:25 01/25/18) Sean,
If it's a 4 speed, I'm wondering if the 8 is actually an "S" for Sherman?
Keith

No, it still needs a fifth digit (numeral) to be a complete model number. If it had an S to denote a Sherman then that would be after the fifth digit.

John Smith's "Identifying Old Ford Tractors" web page is conspicuously missing the 8 as a possible last digit in the model number for the 4 cylinder 2000 & 4000 series models. It lists 0 through 7, as well as 9, but not 8.

(quoted from post at 14:56:52 01/25/18) Could be a 3?

A 3 would make it a 4 speed with 3 point hydraulics and PTO, so that doesn't conflict with what we've seen from the pictures so far. So a 3 is a good possibility.

(quoted from post at 19:38:41 01/25/18) The HD 4040 never came with a 5 speed. Just the 4 speed and SOS

I'm pretty sure we've determined is a 4030 light industrial.

Thanks, has 5speed

A 5 speed on a 4030 should have live PTO and should be 40309.

Has lever on left of trans to engage pto.
Last number definitely 8.
Will post pics of digits soon.
What is the best manual for this unit?
Thanks again!
