starter gear drive issue ford 3000/3400 w pictures

just ordered a new starter drive gear from yesterdays tractors and the new one is considerably bigger than the old one. SEE PHOTOS PLEASE. I am wondering if this new one would work in place of the old one?
its off a ford 3400 1966. This is the part that showed compatible with my tractor. Wondering if anyone has had this same issue?

The ring gear and starters were different between the diesel and gasoline versions of the 3 cylinder thousand series.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the diesel needed to spin faster to start so it would probably need the starter with the larger gear.

Does yours have a gasoline or diesel engine? Did the listing for the gear that you purchased specify which it was for?
 
After looking at the pictures for a while I'm wondering if the teeth on your original gear are just worn down to the point that it's smaller. Do they have the same number of teeth?

nope .. see the above picture of the gear from the yesterdays tractor website.
Ford starter drive is all that is written on the receipt
 
the starter is an AUTOLITE. I am not sure what came with these tractors as far as name brand. But I cant imagine the gear drive would be different no matter what company it was. The flywheel doesn't change
 
I have several digital calipers and have been in the machine manufacturing business as a machinist, mechanical engineer, and machine assembler for over 49 yrs. and have never seen a dimension displayed in that manner, nor have any of my colleagues. What make are those Calipers?
 
You assembled your colleagues to take a look at my caliper? WOW!
Did they have any thoughts as to the thread topic?
 
Sorry if I upset you, the reason I read your post in the first place is I just had a issue with the starter on my 1710 making a loud grinding noise as if it was't engaging the flywheel. This only happened 2 or 3 times and in the below 0 temps. we have been having in the last 2wks. I took the solenoid apart and cleaned it out and sprayed a little lube, the problem went away. For your gear to have worn that much I would think you would have heard some gosh awful grinding noise for several yrs. and you would have a pile of metal filings in the bellhousing from both the gear and what ever the gear was hitting and I am sure it wasn,t the flywheel. Looking at the gear I can still see what looks like the original leads though beat up as you would expect them to be , therefore my guess is you bought the wrong starter drive gear or some one in the past put the wrong shorter one on which was able to work ok. Before I put that longer one on I would do some measuring from the starter mount face to the ring gear and to what ever is beyond the ring gear to be sure there is clearance. I would measure the drive both extended and retracted. I hope this helps and again I am sorry if I upset you I was only curious and btw we weren't very busy at work yesterday LOL.
 
Parts drawings shows the drive for a 3000/3400 gasser is D2NN11350B, so that first one should be the correct one.

As to what might have worn it down, the teeth on the starter drive gear only engage with the teeth on the flywheel ring gear, so that would be my guess. Have you looked at the ring gear teeth to see if they look worn also?

A couple of actual reasons for excessive wear might be, in no particular order:

1. The bolts holding the starter in place loosened at some point which allowed movement so that the gears didn't mesh properly.

2. Bearings in starter wore down to where the shaft was wobbling.

3. Foreign material got inside bell housing.

Any of these could have happened years ago and the gears could have been worn like that ever since. What is the reason that you're replacing the drive at this point in time?

The starter drive gear sheared off. Had to be replaced. I ran a magnate as much as I could down in the bottom of the bell housing and did find some old small metal pieces. That could be the culprit for sure.
I ended up putting this longer starter gear drive on the old starter and rebuilding it.
Fired right up so it appears to be working

When I read your original post that said the new one was "bigger", I had thought you were talking about the outside diameter of the gear teeth being larger until you just said "longer". I hadn't even noticed that in your pictures until just now.

I installed it and it is now working.
I'm kind late in posting, but here are some pics showing what happened to me.
When I got my 640 I had to replace the ring gear, it had the teeth worn down. Bought a new Bendix to replace the old one.
Some years later I had to replace the Bendix again, looked at the teeth on the ring gear.......chewed again.
Ordered a new gear and complete starter.
As you can see the 2 old Bendix were the wrong length.
Replaced both and have had no trouble since......while knocking on wood.

similar issue I dealt with. The clutch in my 3400 was recently done and it looks like they put a new ring gear on so I am happy about that!
Right now my junk runs and starts great. I can see a new carburetor in the near future however
