Working on a 981 diesel for a friend. He bought it not running and brought it to me to get it running. Found it had a blown head gasket between 2 and 3 and a couple bent
push rods. He had the valves ground while the head was off as they looked a little rough. Cylinder walls looked good and showed no signs of wear. Put it back together and
it starts but smokes like crazy and has poor throttle response but it will start as soon as you hit the button. I cant see how it is a compression problem. I checked the
injectors and they seem to be fine. He had another injection pump off a parts tractor and I put it on and it seemed to make no difference. He took the original pump and
had it checked and the pump shop said it tested ok. I put it back on but still runs the same. Have timing set at 23 degrees. I removed the front cover today to check cam
and crank gear and they appear fine. Im lost where to go next wondered what others opinions might be. Thanks
