172 diesel has me stummped

Working on a 981 diesel for a friend. He bought it not running and brought it to me to get it running. Found it had a blown head gasket between 2 and 3 and a couple bent
push rods. He had the valves ground while the head was off as they looked a little rough. Cylinder walls looked good and showed no signs of wear. Put it back together and
it starts but smokes like crazy and has poor throttle response but it will start as soon as you hit the button. I cant see how it is a compression problem. I checked the
injectors and they seem to be fine. He had another injection pump off a parts tractor and I put it on and it seemed to make no difference. He took the original pump and
had it checked and the pump shop said it tested ok. I put it back on but still runs the same. Have timing set at 23 degrees. I removed the front cover today to check cam
and crank gear and they appear fine. Im lost where to go next wondered what others opinions might be. Thanks

No. Just running with the intake manifold on. Have the filter box off. The exhaust manifold was pretty nasty inside but I pressure washed it out before putting it back on.

I am just wondering why it had bent push rods and blown head gasket to begin with. Too much ether maybe? Did you happen to check the head for flattness and cracks when it was off? Also, how are camshaft lobes? If intakes not opening far enough, it may be pulling oil up past the rings. Let us know what you find out! Also check crankcase breather

I had thoughts about too much ether too. Being a select o speed it?s not like they tried to pull start it with rain down the exhaust. It?s not oil smoke but white fuel smoke. Wondered about the cam too going to check that out. Thanks

I think I might pull the pump off our 971 I know is running good and try it on this one. I?m had that thought earlier today. You might be on to something. Thanks!

ford9000puller,

I hesitate to make this post because you guys obviously know a whole lot more about this engine that I do, however, for what it's worth, here goes.

I have a Ford 4000, four cylinder diesel. Not too long after I bought it, it developed a problem where the throttle would only bring the engine up to about 1000-1200 RPM. The engine smoked a lot of white smoke. The engine always started right up and would idle fine, but it belched white smoke.

The problem turned out to be a kink in the fuel return line from the pump to the fuel tank. Replaced a portion of the line with a piece of flexible hose, and it fixed the problem.

So there, I said it.

Good luck finding your problem.

Can you advance the timing any more? With the idea that somehow the marks are not accurate. A cousin that complained about his Massey white smoking after he changed the pump. I turned the pump while running till it cleared up. He used it for years no problem.

I have been through this before, my solution was to replace the bent connecting rod. They can be checked with a good straight edge and a feeler gauge.

You probably already know this but check the fuel if you haven't already. Have seen many times when gas has been dumped in with the diesel fuel and will cause the symptoms you described.
