Ford 800 fuel system question

Hey y’all,

I’m replacing a broken fuel tap/shutoff on my Ford 800. Just want some opinions on two quick questions.

First this is that silly style fuel tap/ shutoff that has the two screws that hold it to the underside of the gas tank and has a small half inch or so O ring where it mates. I am a bit worried since I have heard some horror stories that the new replacements are prone to leaking....so what are the options on using a thin film of some kind a permatex, Teflon, gas sealant product with the O ring?

Second question, I also have a new hard metal fuel line coming as well, flared ends with threaded collar fittings kinda like a brake line. Any thoughts on using any kind of sealant in threads or on the flare of the tubing to avoid leaks?

Just trying to put this back together only one time and no leaks. Thanks

The O-ring between the tank and valve, and the tubing connections are
not where the leaks normally occur so I wouldn't use sealant there.
The valve tends to leak through the shutoff screw which has an
internal o-ring and requires disassembly of the valve to replace.
If you use sealant you risk contamination of the carb by stray sealant
getting into the system.

Andy answered the question on the valve. On the fuel line I always use one turn of plumber's tape. Works well for me.

Gas will eat Permatex, so it would be a waste of time.
As Andy said, that's not normally where the leak is anyways.
If you need something to hold the O-ring in place while assembling,
a dab of axle grease or Vaseline does a pretty good job.
On flare fittings, the flare makes the seal, not the threads,
so no need for anything on the threads there either.

Here's a picture of a sediment bowl someone tried to seal with
RTV. You can see it didn't work to well. Carb was full of blue too.

I just put on an after market fuel shut off on my 841 no leaks . The only problem is i have to use a screw drive to turn off the fuel it weeps a little
when I turn it by hand. I also so had to replace the fuel sediment bowl assembly due to striped threads on the original. I bought a new
aftermarket fuel line with the rubber hose. The new sediment bowl assembly where the fuel line connects is a little lower than the original one
which bends the rubber part of the fuel line and I believe it restricts the fuel. Ended up just building my own i should have take the suggestion on here and saved myself some
money.

Thanks all for the good info. When the parts arrive I’ll just put them together dry and snug.

Another question brought up by the posts I see some of these 800’s had a sediment bowl assembly?

Not sure where one would go and my machine had none when
I got it. There is the fuel tap/ shutoff that is screwed to the underneath of the tank the there is the fuel line and then that screws into the brass elbow at the carb.

Am I missing something?

It attached to front of carb with a hollow bolt. Perhaps you have a non-original carb?

It mounted on the carb, where your brass elbow is.
It used a hollow bolt to let gas flow from the line into the carb.
If someone doesn't post a picture of it I will when I get home.

They originally had a sediment bowl as shown below. Hollow bolt goes
through top section of sediment bowl assembly and into the carb.

Oooo

I see ... lol.... my tractor did not come with one just had fuel line straight into the carb brass elbow.

Guess I gotta order a few more goodies.

Thanks for the help!

Ok last question .... I hope

I’m looking through my FO 20 shop guide and cannot find a good schematic of the fuel system. Can somebody tell me which is correct?

Fuel shutoff to fuel line to sediment bowl to brass elbow to carb.

Or

No brass elbow?

Just trying to figure out if the carb is supposed to have the same style brass elbow/ tube screen as on the N series carbs or just the sediment bowl.

ee posted picture....there is no brass el

If you decide to order a sediment assembly be careful to measure the
size of your carb inlet. There are two different sizes, 3/8 and 7/16.
You must get the setup that matches.
