Hundred series starter

New replacement starter for 640 Ford came with drive gear engaged(gear closest to motor).
If installed with gear in that position, doesn't that mean starter will be locked same as when you have to rock tractor in gear to dis-engage starter from flywheel?
How do I move gear to where it should be?

That bendix should have a centrifugal release, so the first time that you start the engine with it and it spins up to speed it should release. Or you could use a wire wheel on a bench grinder to spin it up to speed so it will release before you install it.

I figured it would return once tractor started but don't see how the starter would work in that position the first time. I'll try spinning it with a grinder. Thanks for the advice.

A much quicker way to retract the drive would be to bolt starter together and spin it up on the bench -12 volts works best.

Actually,I tested the starter on the bench and the drive didn't retract. Weather has been unsuitable to work so I haven't got back over there to try using a grinder.

Maybe we just struggle.....but the grinder trick took a few tries. It worked , after I got all frustrated.

I suspect you have a faulty Bendix. If it won't retract on the bench, it likely won't retract once installed.

When testing, be sure to clamp the starter down to prevent counter rotation when connecting power and use a fully charged 12volt battery.
