Shifting into 1st 2nd gear - old 4000 - 5 speed

I have an old style Ford 4000, four cylinder diesel, with a 5 speed transmission. It has just recently developed a problem with shifting into 1st and 2nd gears. It will shift, but it requires excessive force to get it into either of those gears. The New Holland parts manual shows a fork and a gate for shifting into 1st/2nd gear. Neither of them is any longer available.

I don't know anything about repairing a transmission. I can lift the shift cover and inspect the fork and gate, but I'm not sure that I'd know any more after having done so than I would before doing so.

Any ideas / recommendations?

Thanks,

I have to assume that this is at a stop, and you imply that it slips right into 3,4,5 no problem. Is this the case?

altho I think it unlikely, one easy item to check is the detent mechanism - on the left side of the transmission are three slotted screw headed plugs that contain the detent mechanism, you could remove the middle one which should allow the associated spring and detent to be removed and then you could see if it made any difference in the shift - -

Tom, yes I know that the transmission has no synchros, LOL. My 9000 has a clutch clearance problem that I need to get at, and it will go into the higher gears OK while it grinds going into the lower ones. This is due simply to the ratios. You have a clutch problem. It is not your transmission. Have you checked your clutch linkage to see if it can be taken up?

Thanks Guys,

That's really helpful information. I don't have a shop so I do everything in an old tobacco barn. It was 14 degrees this morning when I went out to do the chores, so I think I'm going to wait a while before I work on the tractor very much.

I'll post later to tell you what I find.
